Quick answer

If your trip covers two or more Gulf countries, one regional Gulf (GCC) eSIM is usually the best choice. A single TripoSIM Gulf eSIM works in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. You install it once at home, and WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work on it with no VPN. Staying in one country only? A single-country eSIM is often better value.

Planning a trip to Dubai, Riyadh, Doha or Muscat? Many Gulf trips include more than one country. A stopover in Doha, a week in Dubai, then a few days in Saudi Arabia is very normal. This guide helps you pick the right eSIM for your exact trip, so you do not pay for data you do not need, and you do not land without signal.

Key facts

  • The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has six member countries: the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain.
  • A TripoSIM Gulf (GCC) eSIM covers all six countries on one eSIM. Plans range from 1 GB for 7 days up to 10 GB for 30 days, plus daily plans. See live Gulf plans and prices.
  • TripoSIM eSIMs are data-only. You keep your own phone number on your home SIM.
  • The plan starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in a covered country, not when you buy it.
  • WhatsApp and FaceTime calls are blocked on local UAE SIMs and Wi-Fi, and app calls are often restricted on local networks in Oman and Qatar.
  • TripoSIM connects as international roaming, so WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work with no VPN. We tested this in Dubai and Saudi Arabia in October 2026.
  • You can install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi with a QR code or a one-tap install link from your delivery email.

Do you need a Gulf eSIM or a single-country eSIM?

It depends on how many countries you visit. Here is the simple rule:

  • Two or more GCC countries: choose one Gulf (GCC) regional eSIM. One install, one plan, every border.
  • One GCC country only: choose a single-country eSIM, such as the UAE eSIM or the Saudi Arabia eSIM. It is often cheaper for the same amount of data.
  • Gulf plus Egypt, Jordan or Turkey: a wider Middle East plan may suit you better. See our Middle East eSIM guide.

A short airport transit does not usually count as a "country" for your data plan. If you only change planes in Doha or Dubai, airport Wi-Fi is often enough for messages. But if you leave the airport, even for one night, you will want mobile data for maps, taxis and calls.

Your options compared

There are four main ways to get online in the Gulf. This table shows how they compare.

OptionCountries coveredWhatsApp callsSetupBest for
TripoSIM Gulf (GCC) eSIMAll 6 GCC countries on one eSIMWork, no VPN neededInstall at home; connects when you landTrips to 2 or more Gulf countries
TripoSIM single-country eSIM1 countryWork, no VPN neededInstall at home; connects when you landTrips to one Gulf country

Home roaming is easy, but it can be very expensive, so check your carrier's daily rate before you fly. Local SIMs are good value for long stays. However, you need a new SIM in each country, and app calls may not work on them. You can compare typical travel eSIM prices around the world in our eSIM price index.

How much data do you need in the Gulf?

Most travellers use more data in the Gulf than they expect. Cities are spread out, so you use maps and ride-hailing apps a lot. It is also hot for much of the year, so you spend time indoors sharing photos and videos.

Here are rough numbers for common tasks:

  • Maps and navigation: about 5–10 MB per hour of driving.
  • Ride-hailing apps: small, but you open them many times a day.
  • WhatsApp voice call: about 0.5–1.5 MB per minute.
  • WhatsApp or FaceTime video call: about 5–15 MB per minute (roughly 300–900 MB per hour).
  • Social media with photos and short videos: 100–300 MB per hour.

As a simple guide:

  • Light use (maps, messages, a few calls): about 0.5 GB per day.
  • Normal use (plus social media and daily calls): about 1 GB per day.
  • Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 2 GB or more per day.

Do WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work in the Gulf?

This is the question Gulf travellers ask most. The answer depends on the network you use, not just the country.

OmanApp calls commonly restrictedWork, no VPN
QatarApp calls can be inconsistent or blocked at timesWork, no VPN

BahrainGenerally availableWork, no VPN

Why the difference? A TripoSIM eSIM is not a local line. It connects as international roaming, and your data goes through the eSIM's home network. That is the same kind of connection visitors have always used when roaming. It is not a trick, and you do not need a VPN or any extra app.

One tip matters a lot: turn Wi-Fi off before you call in the UAE. Phones prefer Wi-Fi. If you are on hotel or mall Wi-Fi, the call goes over the local network and will not connect.

Networks and coverage in the Gulf

The Gulf has very fast mobile networks, with wide 4G and 5G coverage in cities. The main networks are:

  • UAE: e& (Etisalat) and du
  • Saudi Arabia: STC, Mobily and Zain
  • Qatar: Ooredoo and Vodafone Qatar
  • Kuwait: Zain, Ooredoo and stc
  • Oman: Omantel, Ooredoo and Vodafone Oman
  • Bahrain: Batelco, Zain and stc

Your eSIM uses a partner network in each country. To see which networks travel eSIMs use in each Gulf country, and where 5G is available, check our travel eSIM network map.

Coverage is strong in cities, airports and along the main highways. It gets weaker deep in the desert, in mountain areas such as Jebel Shams in Oman, and in the Empty Quarter. If you plan a desert trip, download offline maps first. Our Oman road trip guide has more tips for remote areas.

How to set up your Gulf eSIM before you fly

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked on our compatibility page.
  2. Buy your Gulf (GCC) eSIM, or a single-country eSIM if you only visit one country.
  3. At home, on Wi-Fi, install the eSIM. Tap the one-tap install link in your delivery email (iPhone with iOS 17.4 or later, or Android), or scan the QR code. The QR code can only be used once, so do not delete the eSIM after installing it.
  4. Keep your home SIM in the phone for your number and bank codes, but turn off data roaming on it to avoid charges.
  5. When you land, turn on the TripoSIM eSIM, set it as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it. Your plan starts when it first connects to a network in a covered country.
  6. When you cross into the next Gulf country, the eSIM finds the new network by itself. If it does not connect after a few minutes, turn airplane mode on and off.

Honest limitations

  • Data-only. A TripoSIM eSIM gives you mobile data, not a local phone number. Some local services, such as certain food delivery or banking apps, may ask for a local number.
  • One country? Go local. If you only visit one country, a single-country plan often gives you more data for your money.
  • Remote areas. No eSIM or SIM can promise signal everywhere in the desert or the mountains.
  • Busy places. Networks can slow down in huge crowds, such as near the Haram in Makkah at prayer times or at big events.
  • Not for long stays. If you are moving to the Gulf for work, a local SIM with a local number will make daily life easier.
  • Your phone matters. The eSIM only works on an unlocked phone that supports eSIM.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for travelling to several Gulf countries?

For two or more GCC countries, a regional Gulf (GCC) eSIM is usually the best choice. One TripoSIM Gulf eSIM covers the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, so you install it once and stay connected across every border.

Which countries does a Gulf (GCC) eSIM cover?

The TripoSIM Gulf (GCC) eSIM covers all six GCC countries: the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. Check the plan page for the networks used in each country.

Do WhatsApp calls work in Dubai on a Gulf eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp and FaceTime calls are blocked on local UAE SIMs and Wi-Fi, but they work on a TripoSIM eSIM with no VPN, because it connects as international roaming. We tested this in Dubai in October 2026. Turn Wi-Fi off before you call.

Is a Gulf eSIM cheaper than separate eSIMs for each country?

If you visit two or more Gulf countries, one regional plan is usually simpler and often cheaper than buying several country plans. If you stay in one country only, a single-country eSIM is usually better value. See live Gulf prices.

When does my Gulf eSIM plan start?

The plan starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in one of the covered countries, not when you buy or install it. That means you can install it at home a few days before your flight.

Will I keep my own phone number?

Yes. TripoSIM eSIMs are data-only. Your normal SIM stays in your phone, so your number, WhatsApp account and SMS bank codes stay the same, if your carrier allows SMS abroad.

How much data do I need for 10 days in the Gulf?

For normal use, with maps, messages, social media and some calls, 10 GB is a good fit for 10 days. Light users can manage with 5 GB. If you make daily video calls, choose more data or plan to top up.

Does the Gulf eSIM work in Saudi Arabia for Umrah?

Yes. Saudi Arabia is included, and WhatsApp calls are allowed there. If your trip is only Umrah in Saudi Arabia, a single-country Saudi Arabia eSIM may be better value. Read our Umrah eSIM guide for more tips.
