- Messaging works. You can send WhatsApp texts, voice notes, photos and videos as normal.
- App calls are blocked on local networks. If you are on a UAE SIM card or local Wi-Fi, the WhatsApp call button and FaceTime calls usually do not connect.
- Licensed apps are allowed. Apps such as BOTIM are the official local option for internet calls.
This catches many visitors by surprise. They land, join the hotel Wi-Fi or buy a local SIM, and find that their calls home simply do not go through.
Why calls work on a TripoSIM travel eSIM
Here is the useful part. A TripoSIM travel eSIM does not connect you as a local UAE subscriber. It connects as an international roaming connection, and your data is routed through the eSIM's home network. Because of this, WhatsApp and FaceTime calls behave the way they do in most other countries: they just work.
