Which Countries Block WhatsApp & FaceTime Calls (2026)
Some countries restrict voice and video calling over apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime and Skype. Here's where — and how to still call home when they're blocked.
Quick answer
On TripoSIM, WhatsApp & FaceTime calls work in these countries without a VPN (tested in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Oct 2026).
A TripoSIM travel eSIM connects as international roaming and sends your data through the eSIM's home network, not through the local operators that restrict app calls. So WhatsApp, FaceTime and Skype voice and video calls simply work, with no VPN app. If a call ever doesn't connect, our 24/7 support team will help.

"VoIP" calling (voice/video over the internet) is restricted or blocked on local networks in a handful of countries — most often in the Gulf, and via the national firewall in mainland China. Messaging and data almost always still work; it's the calling feature that's affected.

How to still call home when calls are blocked
1. Use a TripoSIM travel eSIM. It connects as international roaming and routes your data through the eSIM's home network, not through the local operators, so WhatsApp, FaceTime and similar apps work with no VPN. We tested it in the UAE and Saudi Arabia in October 2026. Data and messaging work too.
2. Keep your home number reachable with HomeLink. TripoSIM HomeLink forwards calls to your home number through to your phone over data, so you don't miss important calls (like bank OTPs) even where local VoIP is restricted.
3. Use a licensed local app where one exists. In the UAE, for example, licensed apps such as BOTIM are the officially permitted route for app calling.
