Inside Masjid al-Haram itself, signal is usually workable — during peak Umrah and Ramadan, when hundreds of thousands are on their phones at once, expect it to slow down at the busiest times (after Isha, during the last ten nights). A voice note or WhatsApp message will get through; a 4K video upload may need to wait until you are back at the hotel.

Madinah: Excellent coverage around Masjid an-Nabawi and throughout the city. Generally faster and less congested than Makkah simply because the crowds are more spread out.

Between cities and at the sites: The Haramain high-speed train between Makkah, Jeddah and Madinah has coverage along most of the route. If your trip extends to the Hajj sites — Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifah — coverage exists but is the most congested of all during Hajj season, when two million people are in a few square kilometres. Send the important messages early.

Much of Umrah is now organised in the Nusuk app from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. You use it to book your Umrah permit and your visit to the Rawdah in the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. Nusuk needs internet, so check that your eSIM works before you walk to the Haram.

• Set up Nusuk at home. Install the app and sign in before you fly, while you are on Wi-Fi. Take a screenshot of each permit in case the network is slow at the gate.
• Inside Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi, mobile data usually works, but it slows down when the crowds are biggest: after Isha, on Fridays and in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Messages and voice notes get through. Send videos from your hotel.
• Keep your home SIM switched on for bank codes and family calls, with data roaming turned off on that line, so you pay no roaming charges.
• Bring a power bank. Maps, permits and video calls use a lot of battery on long days between the hotel and the Haram.
