Quick Answer
You don't strictly need one, but it often helps. Many American clients prefer to call a US number: it's a normal local call for them, it looks familiar, and it shows you're easy to reach. The TripoSIM US Number gives you your own US number in an app for $100 a year, with 300 outgoing minutes a month to US and Canadian numbers, incoming calls, and voicemail for when you're asleep in another time zone. It can't send texts, and it isn't for call centres or mass calling.
You do great work for clients in the US. But when a new client asks "what's the best number to reach you?", giving a foreign number can feel like a small barrier. Some people won't call an international number at all. Others worry about the cost.
A US number removes that barrier. Here's how freelancers, consultants and small agencies outside the US use one, and what to watch out for.
Why a US number helps you win and keep US clients
- It feels local. To an American client, your number looks like any other US business.
- It's easy to call. A normal call within the US, with no international dialling.
- More people answer. When you call back from a US number, people are more likely to pick up than for an unknown foreign number.
- It keeps work and personal apart. Your personal number stays private.
- It goes where you go. It rings in the TripoSIM app, at home or on the road, whenever you have internet.
How freelancers actually use it
On your website, profile and invoices
Add your US number to your website, LinkedIn, proposals and email signature. Choose an area code that matches your main clients, for example New York or California.
For discovery and follow-up calls
Most client calls are short. 300 minutes a month is ten 30-minute calls, or about twenty 15-minute calls. Incoming calls are separate, with fair use up to 300 minutes a month. If you have a busy month, you can buy 100 more outgoing minutes for $5.
Voicemail across time zones
When it's 9 a.m. in New York, it may be the middle of the night where you are. Callers reach your voicemail, which is included. Messages can be up to 2 minutes each, up to 30 a month, and are kept 30 days, so you can call back in your morning.
Calls with Canadian clients too
Outgoing minutes cover both US and Canadian numbers.

The honest limits for business use
- You can't send texts. Clients can text you from US and Canadian numbers, but you reply by phone, email or a messaging app.
- No 911, and no calls to countries other than the US and Canada.
- Personal and small-business use only. No spam, robocalls, cold-calling lists, call centres or mass calling. Breaking this rule can get the number suspended without a refund.
- Verification codes aren't guaranteed. Many banks, payment platforms and messaging apps refuse internet numbers. Don't use it as the only sign-in number for your business accounts. Read will a virtual US number work for verification codes?
- Internet is required. On a weak connection, call quality drops. Use good Wi-Fi or reliable mobile data for important calls.
- Some countries restrict internet calling apps, such as the UAE. See our list of countries that block internet calls.
Tips for professional calls
- Use headphones with a microphone for clearer sound and less echo.
- Find a quiet spot with strong Wi-Fi before an important call.
- Keep notifications on for the TripoSIM app, or calls go straight to voicemail.
- Test before you share the number: call a friend in the US and ask how you sound.
- Plan for time zones: put your working hours in your email signature next to your number.
Working while you travel?

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a US address or a US company to get a US number?
You don't need to live in the US. The TripoSIM US Number is sold to people in any country except sanctioned ones.
Can I use the number for WhatsApp Business?
We can't promise it. WhatsApp may refuse internet numbers, so keep WhatsApp on your mobile number.
Is 300 minutes a month enough?
For most freelancers, yes: that's ten 30-minute calls to US or Canadian numbers each month, plus incoming calls. If you need more, add 100 minutes for $5.
Can my clients text me?
Yes, from US and Canadian numbers. You can't text back from this number, so reply another way.
Can I cancel?
You can cancel the renewal anytime in the app. Your number keeps working until the end of the year you paid for. Payments are non-refundable, except if we can't deliver your number within 72 hours, or where the law requires a refund.
The bottom line
A US number is a small step that makes you easier to hire and easier to reach. If your clients are in the US or Canada and you mainly need calls and voicemail, choose your US number and add it to your website today.
