Will a Virtual US Number Work for Bank and App Verification Codes? (Our 2026 Tests)

This is one of the most common questions we get about US numbers. Many internet numbers are refused by apps, so it's a fair question to ask before you buy. Instead of guessing, we tested ours with the apps people use most, and we share the results here.

What we tested (October 2026)

These are the results of our own tests on TripoSIM US numbers. Each company sets its own rules and can change them at any time, so a result can change too. We keep the latest list on the US Number page.

Why do some banks refuse internet numbers?

To fight fraud. Internet numbers are easy to get, so some banks look up every number before they send a code. If the lookup says "internet number" (sometimes called VoIP) instead of "mobile number", they may block it. Every bank decides for itself, which is why we can't promise every single one. Ask your bank before you change the number on your account.

Tips for getting your codes smoothly

• Keep the app online. Codes arrive in the TripoSIM app over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so make sure you have internet and notifications are allowed.
• Choose "text message" when asked. If a text doesn't arrive, look for a "call me instead" option. Incoming calls are included in your plan.
• Wait a minute before asking again. Asking for many codes quickly can make a service pause sending.
• You can't send texts from the number. A service that asks you to "text YES to confirm" won't work.
• Texts from senders outside the US and Canada usually can't reach US numbers.

A safety tip: keep your plan active

If you use your US number to sign in to important accounts, keep your plan active. If the plan ends and you don't renew, the number is suspended, kept for 30 days, and then released. A released number may be given to someone else, and you could lose access to accounts tied to it. Where you can, add a backup sign-in method too, like an authenticator app or email.

If your bank won't send codes to it

1. Keep your home SIM on for bank texts

Most phones hold a physical SIM and an eSIM together. Keep your home line switched on so bank texts arrive, but turn its data roaming off so you aren't charged for data. 2. Use an authenticator app

Many services let you switch from text codes to an authenticator app. The app makes codes on your phone with no texts at all, so it works anywhere.

3. Approve sign-ins in your bank's app

Many banks now ask you to approve a sign-in inside their own app instead of sending a text. It's often safer and works over Wi-Fi.

4. Get a US mobile line, if your US bank insists

If a US bank insists on a US mobile number, a mobile line from a US phone company is the most reliable option. That usually means setting it up while you are in the US.

Will WhatsApp accept a virtual US number?

In our tests (October 2026), WhatsApp sent its verification code to the TripoSIM US Number. WhatsApp can change its rules, so we keep testing.

Can I use the TripoSIM US Number for my US bank?

It depends on the bank. Some banks may refuse internet numbers for codes, so check with your bank first, and keep your mobile number or the bank's app approval as a backup.

Can I get a refund if a service won't send me codes?

No. Payments are non-refundable, and the conditions say we can't guarantee every single service. The only exceptions are if we can't deliver your number within 72 hours, or a refund the law of your country requires.

Why did a code arrive once and not the next time?

Services change their rules, and some limit how many codes they send in a short time. Wait a while, check your internet, and try again, or use "call me instead" if it's offered.

Can I receive texts from outside the US?

Usually not. Texts from senders outside the US and Canada usually can't reach US numbers.
