Quick Answer
Use a US number in an app. The TripoSIM US Number lets you pick a US number by state or area code, pay $100 a year, and use it in the TripoSIM app in India over Wi-Fi or mobile data from any provider. You get 300 minutes a month of calls to the US and Canada included, incoming calls, voicemail, and texts from US and Canadian senders. Indian cards often need international online payments switched on. WhatsApp and popular apps sent their verification codes to it in our tests (Oct 2026), though some banks may still refuse internet numbers. It can't send texts or call 911.
India works with America every day. Developers in Bengaluru join stand-ups with teams in California. Consultants in Pune and Hyderabad support clients in Texas. Students in Delhi and Chennai prepare for US universities, and millions of families have someone in New Jersey or the Bay Area.
For all of them, a US number makes life easier: Americans can call it like any local number. This guide shows how to get one from India, how to pay with an Indian card, and the limits to know first.
Why get a US number in India?
- US clients and employers are more likely to call, and to pick up, when they see a US number.
- Family in the US can call you without paying international rates.
- You can call US and Canadian numbers with 300 minutes a month included, for customer support lines, banks, schools or landlords.
- Students can give US universities and landlords a US number before they fly. See our student guide.
Does it work on Jio, Airtel and Vi?
The US number works over the internet, so it doesn't depend on which Indian network you use. Any stable connection works: Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL mobile data, or home broadband Wi-Fi. Call quality depends on your connection, so use good Wi-Fi for important calls. Calling apps are widely used in India. Please follow local rules on internet calling where you use the app.
Paying with an Indian card
The price is $100 a year, charged in US dollars. A few tips:
- Switch on international online payments for your debit or credit card in your bank's app. Many Indian cards have this off by default.
- Expect a foreign-currency fee from some banks, plus the bank's exchange rate.
- Renewals can need your approval. Indian rules on card renewals mean your bank may ask you to approve the yearly renewal, or the automatic renewal may not go through. Check your app before your renewal date so your number doesn't lapse.
The plan is yearly only. There is no monthly option.
Time zones: India and the US
India is on UTC+5:30 all year, which gives some unusual half-hour gaps:
| US city | India is ahead by (US summer) | India is ahead by (US winter) |
|---|---|---|
| New York | 9 hours 30 minutes | 10 hours 30 minutes |
| Chicago or Dallas | 10 hours 30 minutes | 11 hours 30 minutes |
| San Francisco | 12 hours 30 minutes | 13 hours 30 minutes |
A 9 a.m. call in New York is 6:30 p.m. in India in summer and 7:30 p.m. in winter. Calls that arrive at night go to voicemail, with a missed-call alert waiting when you wake up.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a US number in India without a US address?
Yes. You don't need to live in the US. The TripoSIM US Number is sold in any country except sanctioned ones.
Why was my Indian card declined?
Usually because international online payments are switched off. Turn them on in your bank's app and try again, or use another card.
Will my US number work with Jio or Airtel?
Yes. It works over any internet connection, so the Indian network doesn't matter. A strong connection gives better calls.
Can I use it for Upwork or my US bank?
Yes for many services: Upwork, Fiverr, WhatsApp and other popular apps sent their codes to our US numbers in our tests (Oct 2026). Some banks may still refuse internet numbers, so check with your bank. Read US phone numbers for Upwork, Fiverr and freelance clients.
Can I pay monthly?
No. The plan is $100 a year, paid upfront.
