Quick Answer

You don't need one to join, but it can help with clients. Upwork and Fiverr accept freelancers from many countries. In our tests (Oct 2026), Upwork, Fiverr, WhatsApp and other popular apps sent their verification codes to the TripoSIM US Number, but a US number never changes where you live, so keep your profile honest. It helps most with calls: with US clients where the platform's rules allow it, and with direct clients from your website or LinkedIn. The TripoSIM US Number costs $100 a year with 300 minutes a month of calls to the US and Canada included, incoming calls and voicemail. It can't send texts.

If you freelance from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Nigeria, Egypt or anywhere else, you've probably wondered: would a US phone number help me win more American clients? Sometimes, yes. But it's not a magic trick, and using it the wrong way on a platform can cause real problems.

This guide explains when a US number helps, what it can't do for you, and how to stay within platform rules.

Do you need a US number to join Upwork or Fiverr?

No. Freelance platforms accept people from many countries, and they expect you to use your own details. Here's the honest picture:

  • Codes can reach your US number. In our tests (Oct 2026), Upwork and Fiverr sent their verification codes to the TripoSIM US Number, as did WhatsApp, PayPal, Payoneer and Wise. If your plan ever ends and the number is released, you could lose access to accounts tied to it, so keep your plan active or keep a backup sign-in method.
  • Platforms check identity and location. A US phone number doesn't change where you are, and you should never use it to pretend you live in the US. Breaking platform rules can get an account suspended.
  • A US number doesn't change your ranking. We can't promise it brings more jobs on a platform. What it does is make you easier to call.

Respect the platform rules

Both Upwork and Fiverr have rules about sharing contact details and moving conversations off the platform, especially before a contract or order starts. Rules change, so read each platform's current terms. Where calls are allowed, many freelancers use the platform's own call tools first, then share a number once the client asks for it.

How freelancers use a US number with clients

Calls that feel local

An American client sees a familiar number and calls you like any local business. When you call back, they're more likely to pick up than for an unknown foreign number.

Voicemail across time zones

When a client calls during your night, they reach your voicemail. Messages can be up to 2 minutes each, up to 30 a month, kept 30 days. You get a missed-call alert and can call back in your morning. Choose a greeting in one of 18 languages.

Enough minutes for most freelancers

300 minutes a month of calls to US and Canadian numbers is ten 30-minute calls, or about twenty 15-minute calls. Incoming calls are separate, with fair use up to 300 minutes a month. In a busy month, add 100 minutes for $5, or use your $5 welcome credit.

Block time-wasters

Caller blocking is included, so you can stop unwanted calls from reaching you.

How to set up a US number for client work

  1. Pick an area code your clients know: on the US Number page, search by your main clients' state or area code. We hold it for 30 minutes.
  2. Pay for the year: $100, paid upfront by card.
  3. Install the app and sign in: on iPhone or Android, using our app install guide.
  4. Allow notifications and the microphone: so client calls ring even when your screen is locked.
  5. Set a professional voicemail greeting: say your name, your business and when you'll call back.
  6. Add the number where rules allow: your website, LinkedIn, proposals for direct clients and your email signature.

Three lines on one phone

You don't need a work phone:

  • Line 1: your own SIM, for local calls and bank texts.
  • Line 2: your internet: Wi-Fi, mobile data, or any data eSIM or local SIM when you travel. A TripoSIM travel eSIM is one option for working on the road, never required.
  • Line 3: your TripoSIM US number in the app, for client calls.

It works with any SIM, any eSIM and any Wi-Fi.

Working while you travel

If you work from different countries, incoming calls to your US number are included in your plan and arrive over Wi-Fi or mobile data. You don't pay roaming charges to receive them (fair use up to 300 minutes a month, internet needed). Read our guide for remote workers and digital nomads.

The honest limits

  • You can't send texts. Clients can text you from US and Canadian numbers, but you reply by email, platform chat or a call.
  • Verification codes: banks vary. WhatsApp and popular apps such as Google, Apple ID, PayPal and Upwork sent their codes to our US numbers in our tests (Oct 2026). Some banks may still refuse internet numbers, so check with your bank. Read will a virtual US number work for verification codes?
  • US and Canada only. It can't call clients in other countries.
  • No call centres or mass calling. It's for personal and small-business use. Breaking this rule can get the number suspended without a refund.
  • No 911. Use a normal mobile line for emergencies.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a US number to verify my Upwork or Fiverr account?

Yes. In our tests (Oct 2026), Upwork and Fiverr sent their verification codes to the TripoSIM US Number. Keep your profile details true: the platforms check identity and location, and a US number doesn't change where you live.

Will a US number get me more jobs?

We can't promise that. It makes you easier to call for American clients, which can help once you're talking to them.

Can I get in trouble for using a US number?

Using it honestly, for calls with clients, is fine. Using it to hide where you live, or sharing it where the platform's rules don't allow it, can break platform rules.

Can clients text me on it?

Yes, from US and Canadian numbers. You can't text back from this number.

Is 300 minutes a month enough?

For most freelancers, yes. If not, add 100 minutes for $5.

The bottom line

Keep your profile honest, and use your US number for what it does best: calls with American clients, plus codes from the apps you use. If that's what you need, choose your US number. For more ideas, read do freelancers with American clients need a US business number?
