Quick answer
Yes, you can run WhatsApp on a US number while you live outside the US. Get a US number that can receive SMS, such as the TripoSIM US Number ($100 a year or $12.99 a month), then enter it in WhatsApp and type the 6-digit code that arrives in the TripoSIM app. We tested this on freshly set-up numbers on 13 October 2026: the code arrived by SMS within about 5 minutes and registration worked. Keep the number active afterwards, because WhatsApp may ask for a new code later.
Many people want WhatsApp on an American number: freelancers with US clients, online sellers, students heading to the US, and families who want a US contact number. Free "temporary number" websites don't work for this, and they are risky. This guide shows the setup that does work, and the mistakes that cost people their account.
Key facts
- WhatsApp needs a number that can receive an SMS or a call to send you the 6-digit code. The number does not need to be on a SIM card.
- The TripoSIM US Number lives in the TripoSIM app and receives SMS from US and Canadian senders and incoming calls, over Wi-Fi or mobile data in any country.
- Tested: WhatsApp sent its code to TripoSIM US numbers on 3 October and again on 13 October 2026, on freshly set-up numbers. The code arrived by SMS within about 5 minutes.
- Price: $100 a year (about $8.33 a month, includes $5 eSIM credit) or $12.99 a month, cancel anytime.
- One WhatsApp account per number. Your home-number WhatsApp stays as it is unless you move it on purpose.
- A quick ID check (passport or ID card plus a selfie, about 2 minutes) is required once before you choose your number.
Why free and "temporary" numbers fail for WhatsApp
Free SMS websites show the same number to thousands of people. That causes three problems:
- WhatsApp often blocks them. Shared numbers are flagged quickly, so the code never comes.
- Anyone can read your code. The messages are public, so a stranger can take over the account you just made.
- The number disappears. When WhatsApp asks for a new code (new phone, reinstall, security check), you can't get it, and the account is lost.
WhatsApp is an account you keep for years. It needs a number that is yours alone and that stays active.
What you need before you start
| You need | Why |
|---|---|
| A US number that receives SMS | WhatsApp sends the 6-digit code to it |
| The app for that number, with notifications on | So you see the code and incoming calls |
| Internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data) | App numbers work over the internet, in any country |
| WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business | Use WhatsApp Business if your home number already uses WhatsApp on the same phone |
TripoSIM US Number
Your own US number in the TripoSIM app, with SMS codes from US senders and incoming calls included. $100/year or $12.99/month. Choose your US number →
Step by step: WhatsApp on a US number
- Buy the TripoSIM US Number and finish the quick ID check (passport or ID card plus a selfie).
- In the TripoSIM app, choose your number by US state or area code. Allow notifications so the code shows up straight away.
- Decide which WhatsApp app to use. On a phone that already has WhatsApp on your home number, install WhatsApp Business for the US number. On a second phone or a fresh install, you can use regular WhatsApp.
- Open WhatsApp, pick United States (+1) and type your new number, without the +1.
- Choose to get the code by SMS. Open the TripoSIM app, read the 6-digit code and type it into WhatsApp. If the SMS hasn't come after 5–10 minutes, ask for a call instead. Incoming calls ring in the TripoSIM app.
- Set up your profile, then turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp (Settings → Account → Two-step verification) and add an email address. This protects the account if anyone ever tries to register your number.
That's it. Your contacts now see a +1 number on your WhatsApp profile.
Two WhatsApp accounts on one phone
Most people want to keep their personal WhatsApp on their home number and add a US one. The cleanest setup:
| App | Number | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Your home number | Family and friends, as today | |
| WhatsApp Business | Your TripoSIM US Number | US clients, buyers, a US contact number |
Both apps run side by side on iPhone and Android. Your home WhatsApp doesn't change, and nobody in your contacts sees the US number unless you share it. Some Android phones also offer "dual apps" to run two copies of regular WhatsApp, but WhatsApp Business is the official way.
Moving your existing WhatsApp to a US number
Want to keep your chats but switch the number? Use WhatsApp's own Change number feature (Settings → Account → Change number). It moves your account, groups and settings to the new number and can notify your contacts. Before you do it:
- Make sure the US number is set up and that you can see texts in the TripoSIM app.
- Back up your chats first (Settings → Chats → Chat backup).
- Remember that your old number stops being your WhatsApp number.

The biggest risk isn't the setup. It's losing the number later.
- Keep the plan active. WhatsApp can ask for a new code when you change phones or reinstall. If your number has lapsed, you can't receive it.
- Know the grace period. If a payment fails, we suspend the number and hold it for 30 days on the yearly plan, or 90 days on the monthly plan, before it is released. A released number may go to someone else, so renew in time.
- Two-step verification on, always. It stops anyone else from registering your WhatsApp, even if they somehow get a code.
- Don't share the 6-digit code. WhatsApp staff never ask for it.
What it costs
| Plan | Price | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Yearly | $100 per year (about $8.33 a month) + $5 eSIM credit | A WhatsApp number you'll keep, the best value |
| Monthly | $12.99 per month, cancel anytime | Trying it first, or a short project |
Both plans include 300 minutes a month of outgoing calls to the US and Canada, incoming calls (fair use 300 minutes a month), voicemail and SMS from US and Canadian senders. Read more about the monthly plan or what other options cost in how much a US virtual number costs.
Honest limitations
- Internet number, not a SIM line. The number works over the internet. WhatsApp accepted it in our tests, but no one can promise how every app will treat internet numbers in the future.
- Receiving SMS only. You can receive texts from US and Canadian senders. Sending SMS isn't included. WhatsApp messages are fine, because they go over the internet, not SMS.
- Banks may refuse it. Some banks don't accept internet numbers for their codes. See which verification codes work.
- No emergency calls. The number can't call 911 or other emergency services.
- Your country's rules. Some countries restrict internet calls on local networks. WhatsApp chats and the SMS code usually still arrive. Check the local rules where you live.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use WhatsApp with a US number if I live outside the US?
Yes. WhatsApp only needs a number that can receive its 6-digit code by SMS or call. A US number in an app, such as the TripoSIM US Number, works from any country with internet. We tested it on fresh numbers in October 2026.
Does a virtual US number work for WhatsApp verification?
The TripoSIM US Number does. WhatsApp sent its code to our US numbers on 3 and 13 October 2026, and registration worked. Free shared "temporary" numbers usually fail and are unsafe.
How long does the WhatsApp code take to arrive?
In our 13 October 2026 test, the SMS arrived within about 5 minutes. If it takes longer than 10 minutes, choose the call option instead. The call rings in the TripoSIM app.
Can I have WhatsApp on my home number and a US number on the same phone?
Yes. Keep regular WhatsApp on your home number and use WhatsApp Business for the US number. Both apps work side by side on iPhone and Android.
Can I use the US number for WhatsApp Business?
Yes. WhatsApp Business is a good fit if you sell to US customers or want a separate work number. It's the same setup: enter the US number and type the code from the TripoSIM app.
What happens to my WhatsApp if I stop paying for the number?
WhatsApp keeps working until it asks for a new code, for example when you change phones. If your number has lapsed, you can't receive that code. We hold a lapsed number for 30 days (90 days on the monthly plan) before releasing it, so renew in time to keep your account safe.
Is it legal to use a US number for WhatsApp from abroad?
Using a US number you rent in your own name is normal and widely done by freelancers, sellers and families. You still need to follow the internet-calling rules of the country where you use it, and the number can't be used for spam.
Do I need a US address or SSN?
No. You need a valid passport or ID card and a selfie for the quick ID check, and a payment card. No US address or Social Security number is needed.
The bottom line
WhatsApp on a US number is simple when the number is truly yours. Get a US number that receives SMS, register WhatsApp (or WhatsApp Business) with the code, turn on two-step verification, and keep the plan active. Choose your US number in a few minutes, from anywhere.
