Quick Answer
Yes. Your TripoSIM US Number lives in the app, so it goes wherever you go. Travel or move to another country and the number keeps working over Wi-Fi or mobile data, as long as your plan is active (except in sanctioned countries, and some countries, like the UAE, restrict internet calling). The plan renews every year unless you cancel the renewal. If you cancel, it works until the end of the year you paid for. If the plan ends or a renewal isn't paid, the number is suspended, kept for 30 days, and then released, and a released number can't be recovered.
Life moves. You might study in one country, work in another, and spend months travelling in between. One of the nice things about a US number in an app is that it doesn't care where you are. Here's how it works when you travel or move, and how to make sure you never lose your number by accident.
Does the number work in other countries?
Yes. The number isn't tied to a SIM card or a country. It works in the TripoSIM app on iPhone or Android, anywhere you have internet, with any SIM, any eSIM or Wi-Fi. Three things to know:
- Sanctioned countries: the number isn't sold to residents of sanctioned countries or for use there.
- Internet-calling rules: some countries restrict internet calling apps. In the UAE, for example, calls may not work on all networks. Check our list of countries that limit internet calls, and follow local rules where you are.
- Your connection: call quality depends on your Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Travelling: receive US calls with no roaming charges
On a trip, incoming calls to your US number are included in your plan and arrive over Wi-Fi or mobile data. You pay no roaming charges to receive them (fair use up to 300 minutes a month, internet needed). Calls you make to US and Canadian numbers use your 300 included minutes a month. For data, use any local SIM or data eSIM. A TripoSIM travel eSIM is one easy option, but not required. Read how to receive US calls abroad without roaming.
Moving countries: what changes?
Almost nothing:
- Your number stays the same. People in the US keep calling the same number.
- Your minutes stay the same, and still reset on the same day each month.
- Your price and allowances stay fixed for the year you've paid for.
- Your payment card may change. If you open a new bank account, update your card in the app before your renewal date.
You can keep your three lines on one phone: your new local SIM as line 1, any data connection as line 2, and your US number in the app as line 3.
How renewal works
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Plan active, renewal on | It renews automatically every year for $100 |
| You cancel the renewal | Your number keeps working until the end of the year you paid for |
| The year ends without renewal, or a renewal isn't paid | The number is suspended and kept for 30 days |
| After 30 days | The number is released and may be given to someone else |
| Number released | It can't be recovered |
If a renewal fails, sort it out as soon as you can within those 30 days. Update your card in the app, or contact support if you need help.

Is the number mine?
The number is rented to you while your plan is active. That's why renewal matters: if the plan ends, the number goes back after the 30-day hold. If you have a question about your number before your plan ends, contact our support team early.
Tip: don't make the US number the only way into important accounts, like your bank or email. If the number is ever released, you could lose access. Read will a virtual US number work for verification codes?
Moving to the US?
You can keep your TripoSIM US Number in the US, but also get a US mobile line. The app number can't call 911, and some banks prefer a mobile number for codes.
Frequently asked questions
Will my US number work if I move to another country?
Yes, wherever you have internet, except in sanctioned countries. Some countries restrict internet calling, so check the local rules.
What happens if my card expires before renewal?
The renewal can't be paid, so the number is suspended and kept for 30 days. Update your card in the app quickly to keep your number.
If I cancel, do I lose my number straight away?
No. Your number keeps working until the end of the year you paid for. After that, it's suspended, kept for 30 days, and then released.
Can I get my number back after it's released?
No. A released number can't be recovered and may go to someone else.
Do I get a refund for the rest of the year if I cancel?
No. Payments are non-refundable, including unused time or minutes, except if we couldn't deliver your number within 72 hours, or where the law requires a refund.
The bottom line
Your US number goes wherever you go, as long as you have internet and your plan stays active. Keep your card up to date, watch your renewal date, and your number stays yours year after year. Ready? Choose your US number. Planning a long stay abroad? Read our guide to eSIMs for expats.
