Quick answer

Not on local networks, but yes on TripoSIM. FaceTime calls are blocked on UAE SIM cards and local Wi-Fi. A TripoSIM travel eSIM connects as an international roaming connection, so FaceTime audio and video calls work in Dubai and across the UAE with no VPN. We tested it in Dubai in October 2026. iMessage works on every network.

If you have an iPhone, FaceTime is probably how you call home. So it is a shock for many visitors when FaceTime just keeps saying "Connecting…" in their Dubai hotel. This guide explains what is blocked, what still works, and the simple setup that lets you FaceTime your family from the UAE.

Key facts

  • In the UAE, FaceTime, WhatsApp and Skype voice and video calls are blocked by the local operators, e& (Etisalat) and du, on the instruction of the regulator, the TDRA.
  • The block covers local networks: UAE SIM cards and Wi-Fi in hotels, cafés, malls and airports.
  • iMessage, WhatsApp messages, voice notes and photos are not blocked.
  • Licensed apps such as BOTIM are the local alternative for internet calls.
  • A travel eSIM connects as international roaming, with data routed through the eSIM's home network.
  • On TripoSIM, FaceTime audio and video calls work in the UAE with no VPN. We tested this in Dubai in October 2026.

What works and what does not on local UAE networks

On a local SIM or local Wi-Fi, here is what iPhone users usually find:

The background to these rules is covered in Wikipedia's article on internet censorship in the United Arab Emirates.

Why FaceTime works on a TripoSIM eSIM

A TripoSIM travel eSIM does not connect your iPhone as a local UAE line. It is an international roaming connection, and your data is routed through the eSIM's home network. FaceTime therefore connects the same way it does in most other countries.

We tested it in Dubai in October 2026. FaceTime video and audio calls connected on a TripoSIM eSIM, with no VPN app installed. WhatsApp calls worked too.

This is not a workaround. Calls simply work because a travel eSIM is international roaming, the same kind of connection a visitor's own phone line uses abroad, on a prepaid plan.

How to set up FaceTime for the UAE on your iPhone

  1. Check that your iPhone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Most iPhones from the XR and XS onwards do; see our compatibility page.
  2. Buy a UAE eSIM from TripoSIM and install it at home on Wi-Fi: go to Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data), then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code.
  3. In Settings, then Cellular, set the TripoSIM eSIM as your Cellular Data line, and turn off Data Roaming on your home line to avoid charges.
  4. In the same Cellular menu, scroll down and make sure FaceTime is allowed to use cellular data.
  5. When you land, turn on Data Roaming for the TripoSIM eSIM. The plan starts when it first connects to a network in the UAE.
  6. Before a FaceTime call, turn Wi-Fi off in Control Center or Settings, so the call goes over your TripoSIM data and not the blocked local Wi-Fi.
  7. Open FaceTime and call home, with no VPN needed.

Why step 6 matters: an iPhone always prefers Wi-Fi when it is connected. If you are on hotel Wi-Fi, FaceTime tries to use it, and the call is blocked. With Wi-Fi off, FaceTime uses your eSIM, and the call goes through.

Honest limitations

  • Data-only eSIM. TripoSIM gives you mobile data, not a UAE phone number. You keep your own number on your home SIM for SMS and bank codes. FaceTime and WhatsApp calls run over data.
  • Video uses data. As a rough estimate, a FaceTime audio call uses about 0.5–1.5 MB per minute, and a FaceTime video call about 5–15 MB per minute (roughly 300–900 MB per hour). A daily 20-minute video call can use 100–300 MB.
  • Signal matters. Deep inside some buildings, underground car parks or out in the desert, the signal can be weak on any network.
  • Networks can change. Our result is from our own test in Dubai in October 2026. If a call ever does not connect, iMessage and voice notes still go through, and our 24/7 support team in English and Arabic can help.

How much data do you need for FaceTime in Dubai?

  • Mostly iMessage, maps and a few short calls: 3–5 GB for a week.
  • A daily video call home: 5–10 GB for a week.
  • Long daily video calls, or sharing hotspot with a laptop: 10 GB+ or an unlimited-style plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is FaceTime blocked in Dubai?

FaceTime calls are blocked on local UAE networks, meaning UAE SIM cards and local Wi-Fi. On a TripoSIM travel eSIM, FaceTime calls worked in our Dubai test in October 2026, with no VPN.

Does iMessage work in the UAE?

Yes. iMessage works on every network in the UAE, including local SIMs and hotel Wi-Fi. Only FaceTime audio and video calls are blocked on local networks.

Why does FaceTime keep saying "Connecting" in my Dubai hotel?

Your iPhone is using the hotel Wi-Fi, which is a local UAE network where FaceTime calls are blocked. Turn Wi-Fi off so FaceTime uses your TripoSIM eSIM data instead.

Do I need a VPN for FaceTime in the UAE?

Not with TripoSIM. FaceTime works on the eSIM's international roaming connection without a VPN. UAE law penalises VPN misuse and fines can be large, so many travellers prefer not to use one. This is not legal advice.

Does FaceTime work in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah too?

The same rules apply across the whole UAE. FaceTime calls are blocked on local networks everywhere in the country, and a TripoSIM eSIM gives you the same international roaming connection in every emirate.

Can I FaceTime someone who is also in the UAE?

Yes, if your side is on the TripoSIM eSIM. If the other person is on a local UAE SIM or Wi-Fi, their side is blocked, so the call may not connect. They would need a travel eSIM too, or you can use a licensed app such as BOTIM.

How much data does a FaceTime video call use?

As a rough estimate, about 5–15 MB per minute, or roughly 300–900 MB per hour. FaceTime audio uses much less, about 0.5–1.5 MB per minute.
