Quick Answer

Yes. WhatsApp works normally in Jordan in 2026: messages, voice calls and video calls all work on mobile data and on Wi-Fi. Jordan does not block internet calling the way the UAE does, and FaceTime, Messenger, Zoom and Google Meet also work. You only need a data connection. A travel eSIM gives you that from the moment you land, and you keep your usual WhatsApp number.

Planning a trip to Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea or Aqaba and wondering if you can call home on WhatsApp? Good news: Jordan is one of the easiest countries in the Middle East for internet calling. This guide explains what works, what to watch out for, how to keep your own WhatsApp number, and how to stay connected everywhere from the Roman Theatre to the desert camps.

Does WhatsApp calling work in Jordan?

Yes. WhatsApp voice and video calls are not blocked in Jordan. They work on Jordan's mobile networks (Zain, Orange and Umniah) and on hotel, café and airport Wi-Fi. Messages, voice notes, photos and group calls all work as they do at home.

This is the biggest difference from some of Jordan's neighbours. In the UAE, WhatsApp and FaceTime calls are restricted on local networks (see our UAE calling guide). Saudi Arabia has also restricted internet calling in the past (see our Saudi Arabia calling guide). In Jordan, you can simply open WhatsApp and call.

Which calling apps work in Jordan?

AppMessagesVoice callsVideo calls
WhatsAppYesYesYes
FaceTime (iPhone)Yes (iMessage)YesYes
Facebook MessengerYesYesYes
Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft TeamsYesYesYes
Normal phone calls and SMSNeed a phone numberNeed a phone number—

All of these apps work over mobile data or Wi-Fi. Like several countries in the region, Jordan has on rare occasions limited specific apps for short periods. If an app ever stops working, the others in the table are an easy backup.

How to use WhatsApp in Jordan with a travel eSIM

A travel eSIM is a data plan you install on your phone before you fly. It connects to a local Jordanian network when you land, so WhatsApp works straight away, without hunting for Wi-Fi or paying roaming fees.

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM: most iPhones from the XS onwards and most recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones do. See our eSIM compatibility list.
  2. Buy a Jordan eSIM before you travel: choose a plan on the Jordan eSIM page. The QR code arrives by email straight away.
  3. Install it at home on Wi-Fi: scan the QR code in your phone's mobile or cellular settings. Keep the new eSIM line switched off until you land.
  4. Land in Jordan and switch it on: at Queen Alia International Airport (or wherever you arrive), turn on the travel eSIM line and set it as your line for mobile data. Your plan starts when the eSIM first connects in Jordan.
  5. Open WhatsApp: your chats, groups and number are exactly as before. Call home over data.

Will I keep my WhatsApp number?

Yes. Your WhatsApp account belongs to your phone number, not to your SIM card, so changing the SIM that gives you data does not change your WhatsApp number. Friends and family still see the same name and number, and your chats stay the same.

Keep your home SIM in the phone (most phones hold a physical SIM and an eSIM together). You can leave your home line on for normal calls and SMS, for example for bank codes, but turn off data roaming on your home line so you are not charged roaming rates for data. Read more in how to keep your WhatsApp number with an eSIM and can you receive OTP codes and bank SMS with a travel eSIM.

How much data do WhatsApp calls use?

WhatsApp calls use very little data, so even a small plan covers lots of calling:

ActivityTypical data use
Voice callAbout 0.5 to 1 MB per minute
Video callAbout 3 to 8 MB per minute, more in HD
Voice note (1 minute)About 0.2 to 0.5 MB
Photo sentAbout 0.1 to 0.5 MB

As a guide, 10 minutes of video calling a day for a week uses roughly 0.5 GB. If you also use Google Maps, ride apps and social media, a plan with 1 to 2 GB per week suits most travellers. If you make long daily video calls or share your connection with a laptop, choose a larger plan or an unlimited one.

Does WhatsApp work at Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea?

  • Amman, Aqaba and the Dead Sea hotels: strong 4G coverage, and 5G in parts of Amman. WhatsApp video calls work well.
  • Petra: good coverage in Wadi Musa and around the main trail. Signal can drop in the deeper parts of the canyons, so send messages from the open areas.
  • Wadi Rum: coverage is patchy deep in the desert. Many camps have Wi-Fi or a spot with signal. Download offline maps before you head out.
  • The King's Highway and the Desert Highway: coverage is good along most of the main roads, with some gaps between towns.

Which networks does a Jordan travel eSIM use?

Jordan has three mobile networks: Zain, Orange and Umniah. Our Jordan plans connect to Zain or Umniah, depending on the plan, and every plan supports hotspot so you can share data with a laptop or travel partner. The network for each plan is shown on the Jordan eSIM page before you buy.

Tips for calling home from Jordan

  • Use Wi-Fi in hotels when it is fast, and save your eSIM data for when you are out and about.
  • Turn off automatic photo and video backup on mobile data.
  • Use WhatsApp's "Use less data for calls" setting (in Settings, Storage and data) if your connection is slow in remote areas.
  • Tell family about the time difference: Jordan is on UTC+3 all year.
  • Download offline maps of Amman, Petra and Wadi Rum before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Is WhatsApp blocked in Jordan?

No. WhatsApp messages, voice calls and video calls work normally in Jordan on mobile data and Wi-Fi. Jordan does not restrict internet calling the way the UAE does.

Does FaceTime work in Jordan?

Yes. FaceTime audio and video calls work in Jordan, as do iMessage, Messenger, Zoom and Google Meet.

Can I use WhatsApp in Jordan without a Jordanian SIM card?

Yes. You only need a data connection. A travel eSIM, hotel Wi-Fi or roaming on your home SIM all work. A travel eSIM is usually much cheaper than roaming.

Will my WhatsApp number change if I use a travel eSIM in Jordan?

No. Your WhatsApp number stays the same because WhatsApp is linked to your phone number, not to the SIM that provides your data.

How much data do I need for WhatsApp calls in Jordan?

Voice calls use about 0.5 to 1 MB per minute and video calls about 3 to 8 MB per minute. For a week of messaging, maps and short daily video calls, 1 to 2 GB is usually enough.

Does WhatsApp work in Wadi Rum?

Partly. Signal is patchy deep in the desert, but many camps have Wi-Fi or a spot with signal. In Amman, Aqaba, the Dead Sea and Petra's town of Wadi Musa, coverage is good.

Can I make normal phone calls with a travel eSIM in Jordan?

Our travel eSIMs are data-only, so they do not include a Jordanian phone number. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or another calling app over data, and keep your home SIM switched on if you need to receive normal calls or SMS.

The bottom line

WhatsApp works fully in Jordan in 2026: messages, voice calls and video calls, on mobile data and Wi-Fi. All you need is a data connection, and your WhatsApp number stays the same. Install a Jordan eSIM before you fly, switch it on when you land, and call home from Amman, Petra or the Dead Sea from the first minute.
