Quick Answer
Usually not to register, but often for running the business. Big marketplaces usually let sellers from abroad sign up with their own country's phone number. In our tests (Oct 2026), Amazon, PayPal, Payoneer, Wise and Stripe sent their verification codes to the TripoSIM US Number, but a US number doesn't make you a US business. A US number helps with everything around it: a contact number on your store, calls with US customers, suppliers, warehouses and delivery companies. The TripoSIM US Number costs $100 a year, with 300 minutes a month of calls to the US and Canada included, incoming calls, voicemail, and texts from US and Canadian senders.
You sell to American buyers from Istanbul, Lahore, Cairo, Manila or Lagos. Your products are great, your listings are polished, and then a US customer, supplier or warehouse asks for your phone number.
A US number can make your business look and feel local. But it's important to know where it helps and where it doesn't, especially with marketplace rules.
Do you need a US number to open a seller account?
Usually not. Big marketplaces and store builders usually let sellers from abroad register with their own country's mobile number. Here's what to keep in mind:
- Codes can reach your US number. In our tests (Oct 2026), Amazon, PayPal, Payoneer, Wise and Stripe sent their verification codes to the TripoSIM US Number. We haven't tested every marketplace, and some banks may still refuse internet numbers, so check with your bank.
- A US number doesn't make you a US business. It doesn't change your company, address or tax situation. Marketplaces check identity and business documents, and you should always give them true details.
- Rules differ and change. Check each marketplace's own help pages before you start.
Where a US number helps your store
| Use | How a US number helps |
|---|---|
| Contact page on your own online store | US buyers see a familiar number they can call |
| Customer calls about orders and returns | A normal call within the US for them |
| US suppliers and manufacturers | They can reach you without international dialling |
| Warehouses and fulfilment partners | They can call about stock, deliveries and problems |
| Delivery companies | Drivers and depots can call a US number |
| Returning calls to US businesses | Use your 300 included minutes |
On marketplaces, most buyer messages go through the marketplace's own messaging, so your number is often more useful for your own store, suppliers and partners than for marketplace buyers.
Handle customer calls across time zones
You can't answer every call at 3 a.m. Voicemail is included: messages up to 2 minutes long, up to 30 a month, kept 30 days. You get a missed-call alert in the app and can call back during US business hours. Choose a greeting in one of 18 languages, and put your support hours on your contact page.
How to set up a US number for your store
- Choose an area code: on the US Number page, pick a state or area code. We hold your choice for 30 minutes.
- Pay $100 for the year: upfront, by card.
- Install the app and sign in: on iPhone or Android, using our app install guide.
- Allow notifications and the microphone: so calls ring even when the app is closed.
- Record your business greeting: your store name, your support hours and a promise to call back.
- Add the number to your store: on your contact page, packing slips and supplier details.

- 300 minutes a month of calls to US and Canadian numbers, plus 100 more for $5 when you need them.
- Incoming calls included, fair use up to 300 minutes a month. After that, callers reach your voicemail until your monthly reset.
- Caller blocking for spam and unwanted calls.
It's not built for a busy support team, a call centre or mass calling. If your store gets dozens of calls a day, you'll need a business phone system.
Three lines on one phone
You can run this from your everyday phone:
- Your own SIM for local calls and bank texts.
- Any internet connection: Wi-Fi, mobile data, or any data eSIM or local SIM when you travel to trade fairs or suppliers. A TripoSIM travel eSIM is one option, never required.
- Your TripoSIM US number in the app for store calls.
When you travel, incoming calls to your US number are included and arrive over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so receiving them adds no roaming charges (fair use up to 300 minutes a month, internet needed).
The honest limits
- You can't send texts. No order updates or marketing texts from this number. Customers can text you from US and Canadian numbers.
- Verification codes: banks vary. WhatsApp and popular apps such as Google, Apple ID, PayPal and Upwork sent their codes to our US numbers in our tests (Oct 2026). Some banks may still refuse internet numbers, so check with your bank. Read will a virtual US number work for verification codes?
- US and Canada only. It can't call suppliers in other countries.
- No 911, and it needs internet and the app.
