Quick answer
On 9 September 2026 Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are eSIM-only in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, the Gulf countries and a few US territories, and have a nano-SIM tray plus eSIM elsewhere. All three hold two active eSIMs, so a travel eSIM works alongside your home number.
The new iPhone generation is here, and many travellers are asking the same questions: Does the iPhone 18 still have a SIM card slot? Can I use a travel eSIM on it? This guide sticks to what Apple has officially published, checked on Apple's own website on 8 October 2026, and explains how to get online abroad with your new iPhone.

When can you get one?
According to Apple's announcements:
- iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max: pre-orders opened on 12 September 2026, and the phones went on sale on 18 September 2026 in the first group of countries, with 20 more countries and regions from 25 September 2026.
- iPhone Duo: pre-orders open on 16 October 2026, with availability from 23 October 2026 in the first group of countries and in 28 more countries and regions from 30 October 2026.
Availability differs by country, so check Apple's website for yours.
Does the iPhone 18 have a SIM tray?
It depends on the model and where it was sold:
- iPhone Duo: no. Apple says it has an eSIM-only design worldwide.
- iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max bought in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan or the Gulf: no. These are eSIM-only models.
- iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max bought in most other countries: yes. They have a nano-SIM tray as well as eSIM.
What counts is where the phone was sold, not where you live. An iPhone 18 Pro bought in Dubai or New York has no SIM tray, even if you use it in London or Madrid.
To check your own phone, look at the sides for a small slot with a pinhole next to it, or open Apple's tech specs for your country and model and read the SIM Card section. "Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)" means there is a tray. "Dual eSIM" with "not compatible with physical SIM cards" means eSIM-only.
What this means for travellers
An eSIM-only iPhone works abroad just like any other iPhone, with one difference: you cannot put a plastic SIM card in it. For most trips that is a small change:
- Buy and install your travel eSIM before you fly instead of looking for a SIM kiosk at the airport.
- Keep your home number on its own line for calls, texts and bank codes, while the travel eSIM handles your data.
- Use two lines at once. With two active eSIMs, your home line and your travel data line can both be on at the same time.
- Keep eSIMs from earlier trips. The phone can store eight or more eSIMs, so you can switch an old travel eSIM back on if it still has data and validity.
If your iPhone 18 Pro has a SIM tray, you can still use a travel eSIM alongside your physical SIM in exactly the same way.
How to use a travel eSIM on an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone Duo
- Check that your iPhone is unlocked and supports eSIM on our compatibility page.
- Choose your destination on our destinations page and buy your travel eSIM.
- At home, on Wi-Fi, install the eSIM. Tap the one-tap install link in your delivery email (iPhone with iOS 17.4 or later), or scan the QR code from another screen. The QR code works only once, so do not delete the eSIM after installing it.
- Give the eSIM a clear label, such as "Travel data", and leave your home line switched on for calls and texts.
- When you arrive, go to Settings > Mobile Data (Cellular), turn on the travel eSIM, turn on Data Roaming for it and choose it for mobile data. Your plan starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination.
- Turn off Data Roaming on your home line to avoid roaming charges, and turn off "Allow Mobile Data Switching".
TripoSIM eSIMs are data-only. You keep your own number on your home line and can call through apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime over the travel eSIM's data. Apple lists iOS 27 for these models, so one-tap install from the email is supported.

Moving from an older iPhone
When you set up a new iPhone, iOS offers to move your mobile plan from your old iPhone with eSIM Quick Transfer, if your carrier supports it. If your old phone used a physical SIM, many carriers can convert it to an eSIM during setup or in their app.
Travel eSIMs work differently, and some cannot be moved to a new phone. Before you trade in or reset your old iPhone, finish your current travel plan or contact support. Read what happens to your eSIM when you change phones.
5G and satellite features abroad
Apple's tech specs list 5G for the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. Whether you get 5G abroad depends on the local network and on your travel eSIM plan; where 5G is not available, the phone uses 4G/LTE.
Apple also lists satellite features for all three models: Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages via satellite, Find My via satellite and Roadside Assistance via satellite. Apple says these are included free for two years with the activation of any iPhone 14 or later, but availability depends on the country and some features need a carrier plan. Apple describes them as features for when you are outside mobile and Wi-Fi coverage, so they are not a replacement for mobile data. Check Apple's satellite features page for the countries where each feature works.
Tips for travelling with a new iPhone
- Install your travel eSIM a few days before you fly. You can do it at home on Wi-Fi, and the plan does not start until you connect at your destination.
- Keep your home line on for texts. Banks and apps often send one-time codes by SMS.
- Do not delete a travel eSIM you still need. The QR code works only once.
- Check that your phone is unlocked if you bought it from a carrier.
- Bought your iPhone abroad? Check whether it is an eSIM-only model before you rely on a local SIM card.
