iPhones are the most popular phones for travel eSIM, and Apple has been steadily expanding eSIM capability with each generation. If you are a frequent traveler, knowing how many eSIMs your iPhone can hold and how to manage them is essential.

iPhone eSIM Capacity by Model

iPhone ModelMax eSIM Profiles StoredMax Active at OncePhysical SIM Slot
iPhone 16 / 16 Pro / 16 Pro Max8+2 eSIMs simultaneouslyYes (most markets)
iPhone 15 / 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max8+2 eSIMs simultaneouslyYes (most markets)
iPhone 14 (US models)8+2 eSIMs simultaneouslyNo (eSIM only)
iPhone 14 (non-US)8+1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIMYes
iPhone 13 / 13 Pro8+1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIMYes
iPhone 12 / 12 Pro8+1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIMYes
iPhone 11 / 11 Pro8+1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIMYes
iPhone XR / XS / XS Max11 eSIM + 1 nano-SIMYes
iPhone SE (3rd gen)8+1 eSIM + 1 nano-SIMYes

Key Points:

  • iPhone XR/XS: Can only store one eSIM profile at a time. To add a new one, you must delete the existing one.
  • iPhone 11 and newer: Can store 8 or more eSIM profiles, though only 1-2 can be active simultaneously.
  • iPhone 14 US models: No physical SIM tray. Both SIM lines are eSIM. This means you can have your home carrier on eSIM + a travel eSIM simultaneously.
  • iPhone 15/16: Same dual eSIM capability as iPhone 14 in most markets.

What Does "Active" Mean?

Stored: The eSIM profile is on your phone but not being used. It costs nothing and uses no data. Think of it as a SIM card sitting in a drawer.

Active: The eSIM profile is turned on and connected (or ready to connect) to a cellular network. Active eSIMs may use battery even in standby.

On most iPhones, you can have two active lines at once:

  • Line 1: Your home carrier (physical SIM or eSIM)
  • Line 2: Your travel eSIM

This dual-active setup means you receive calls on your home number while using your travel eSIM for data.

How to Manage Multiple eSIMs on iPhone

Adding a new eSIM

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Tap Add eSIM (or Add Cellular Plan)
  3. Choose Use QR Code
  4. Scan the QR code from your TripoSIM purchase
  5. Label it (e.g., "Japan Trip" or "Europe Data")

Switching between eSIMs

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. You will see all your SIM lines listed
  3. Tap the eSIM you want to activate
  4. Toggle Turn On This Line
  5. Go back and tap Cellular Data
  6. Select which line handles your data connection

Removing an eSIM

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Tap the eSIM to remove
  3. Scroll down and tap Delete eSIM
  4. Confirm deletion

Warning: Deleting a travel eSIM is permanent. The QR code cannot be reused. Only delete when you are certain you no longer need the plan.

Practical Scenarios for Multiple eSIMs

Frequent Business Traveler

You regularly visit the US, UK, and Japan. Install eSIMs for all three countries plus your home carrier:

  • Line 1 (always active): Home carrier (Verizon, EE, du, etc.)
  • Stored eSIM 1: USA data plan
  • Stored eSIM 2: UK data plan
  • Stored eSIM 3: Japan data plan

Before each trip, activate the appropriate travel eSIM and set it as your data line. No repurchasing needed if the plans still have data and validity remaining.

Multi-Country Vacation

You are visiting France, Italy, and Spain over 3 weeks. Instead of storing three separate eSIMs, buy one Europe regional eSIM that covers all three:

  • Line 1: Home carrier
  • Line 2: Europe regional eSIM (covers 30+ countries)

One eSIM, one installation, seamless coverage across all three countries.

Family with One iPhone per Person

Each family member's iPhone needs its own eSIM. You cannot share one eSIM across multiple iPhones. TripoSIM Family Packs offer 10% discount for 4+ members.

Tips for Managing Travel eSIMs on iPhone

Label clearly. When you install an eSIM, give it a descriptive custom label. "Travel" is too vague. Use "Japan Dec 2026" or "Europe Summer."

Do not delete too early. Keep travel eSIMs until the plan fully expires. You might have leftover data useful for an unexpected return trip.

Check remaining data. Go to Settings > Cellular > tap the eSIM to see your data usage. Note: this shows data used since the counter was last reset, not remaining plan data. Check your TripoSIM dashboard for accurate remaining data.

Use Cellular Data Switching. iPhone has an option called "Allow Cellular Data Switching" that lets your phone use data from another line if the primary line has no signal. This can be useful as a backup but can also cause unexpected roaming charges on your home SIM. Be careful with this setting.

eSIM Quick Transfer (New iPhone Setup)

When upgrading to a new iPhone, Apple's eSIM Quick Transfer can move your carrier eSIM to the new device. However, this only works with carrier eSIMs, not travel eSIMs. Travel eSIM QR codes are single-use — if you switch phones, you need to buy a new travel eSIM for the new device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have 8 eSIMs active at the same time? No. You can store 8+ but only 2 can be active simultaneously (on iPhone 13 and newer). The rest are stored and dormant.

What happens when I reach the eSIM storage limit? You will need to delete an existing eSIM profile before adding a new one. Delete expired or depleted travel eSIMs you no longer need.

Can I switch eSIMs without WiFi? Yes. Switching between already-installed eSIM profiles does not require internet. Only the initial QR code download needs WiFi.

Does keeping multiple eSIMs stored drain battery? No. Only active eSIMs use battery. Stored (inactive) profiles consume no power.

Do I need a different eSIM for each country? Not if you use a regional plan. A Europe regional eSIM covers 30+ countries with one profile. For unrelated trips (Japan in March, Brazil in August), you would need separate eSIMs.
