Using a Travel eSIM on a China Mainland iPhone (2026): The 2-eSIM Limit & When to Install

Quick Answer

Yes, an eSIM-capable iPhone bought in China mainland can use a travel eSIM abroad, with two important rules. First, Apple says eSIMs from carriers outside China mainland can't be installed while you are in China mainland, so you install your travel eSIM after you arrive abroad (or in Hong Kong or Macau), using airport or hotel Wi-Fi. Second, these iPhones can store and activate up to two eSIMs: if two are already installed, you must delete one, and reactivating a deleted China mainland eSIM requires a visit to your carrier's store. Save your travel eSIM's QR code where you can open it on arrival.

Since China's three operators launched eSIM in October 2025, more and more travelers from China mainland use an iPhone with an eSIM instead of a physical SIM card. That changes how you set up mobile data for trips abroad. The usual advice, "install your travel eSIM at home before you fly", does not work for a China mainland iPhone. This guide explains Apple's rules and gives you a simple plan for your next trip.

Key facts

  • eSIM in China mainland: in October 2025 the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approved domestic eSIM service, and China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom launched it shortly after.
  • Supported iPhones (China mainland models): iPhone Air, iPhone 17e, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo, according to Apple.
  • eSIM-only models: iPhone Air and iPhone Duo have no SIM tray. iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and 17e can use an eSIM or a physical nano-SIM.
  • Two-eSIM limit: you can store and activate up to two eSIMs on an eSIM-capable iPhone bought in China mainland.
  • Travel eSIMs: eSIMs from carriers outside China mainland can't be installed while the phone is in China mainland. Install them abroad.
  • Deleting a China eSIM: to reactivate a deleted China mainland eSIM when you return, you must visit your carrier's store.
  • iPhones bought outside China mainland can't install eSIM profiles from China mainland carriers.

What this means for your trip abroad

The rules change the order of steps. Before, you could install a travel eSIM at home and switch it on when you land. With a China mainland iPhone, you buy before you leave but install on arrival.

Your situationWhat to do
One China eSIM installed (or a physical SIM)Buy the travel eSIM before you leave, install it when you arrive abroad. You have room for the second eSIM.
Two China eSIMs installed (for example two numbers)You must delete one to add a travel eSIM, and reactivating it later needs a store visit. Think about moving one number to a physical SIM if your model has a SIM tray.
iPhone Air or iPhone Duo (eSIM only)Same rules: one China eSIM plus one travel eSIM fits within the two-eSIM limit.
Traveling to Hong Kong or MacauHong Kong and Macau are outside China mainland, so you install the travel eSIM there on arrival.

Step by step: travel eSIM on a China mainland iPhone

  1. Before you leave, buy a travel eSIM for your destination and keep the QR code and activation details where you can open them abroad: save a screenshot in your Photos, keep the email offline, or print it.
  2. Check that only one eSIM is installed (Settings → Mobile Service). If two are installed, decide which line you can do without for the trip.
  3. Do not try to install the travel eSIM while you are still in China mainland, including at the departure airport.
  4. When you land, connect to the airport or hotel Wi-Fi.
  5. Go to Settings → Mobile Service → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. Choose Open from Photos to use your screenshot, scan your printout, or enter the details by hand.
  6. Choose the travel eSIM for Mobile Data and turn on Data Roaming for it. Keep your China line on for calls and SMS codes, with its data roaming switched off.

Tip: if the screenshot does not work, use the manual option with the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your email. See SM-DP+ address explained.

Keep receiving verification codes from China

Your China number stays on your phone, so you can still receive SMS codes from banks, Alipay, WeChat and government apps abroad, as long as roaming for calls and SMS is enabled on your plan. Turn off data roaming on your China line to avoid roaming data charges. Our guide on receiving bank OTP codes with a travel eSIM explains how this works.

Can a China mainland iPhone use an overseas travel eSIM?

Yes. An eSIM-capable iPhone bought in China mainland can use a travel eSIM from a carrier outside China mainland, but you can only install it while you are outside China mainland.

Why can't I install my travel eSIM in China?

Apple says eSIMs from carriers outside China mainland can't be installed while the iPhone is located in China mainland. Install the travel eSIM when you arrive at your destination, or in Hong Kong or Macau.

How many eSIMs can a China mainland iPhone hold?

Up to two. Apple says you can activate and store up to two eSIMs on the same eSIM-capable iPhone purchased in China mainland.

What happens if I delete my China eSIM to make room?

You can install your travel eSIM, but to reactivate the deleted China mainland eSIM when you return, you must visit your carrier's store. Plan ahead so you don't need to delete it.

Which China mainland iPhones support eSIM?

Apple lists iPhone Air, iPhone 17e, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo (China mainland models) as supporting eSIM in China mainland.

Will I still receive SMS codes from my China number abroad?

Yes, if roaming for SMS is active on your China plan. Your China line stays on your phone while the travel eSIM provides data.

Can I install the travel eSIM in Hong Kong?

Yes. Hong Kong and Macau are outside China mainland, so you can install a travel eSIM there on arrival.

The bottom line

A China mainland iPhone works with travel eSIMs, but in a different order: buy before you go, install after you arrive abroad, and keep within the two-eSIM limit so you never have to visit a store to get your China number back. Save your QR code before you leave, connect to airport Wi-Fi when you land, and you are online in a few minutes. Find plans on all destinations.
