Step 1: Check that your phone supports eSIM

Do this before you buy an eSIM. It takes 30 seconds.

Dial *#06# on your phone. If you see a line called EID (a long 32-digit number), your phone supports eSIM.

No EID means no eSIM. On some phones (for example Samsung), scanning an eSIM QR code on a phone without eSIM may offer to link it to a smartwatch instead. That is a sign the phone itself cannot use the eSIM.

Also check that your phone is unlocked. A phone bought on a contract can be "carrier-locked" and refuse other networks. Ask your mobile operator if you are not sure.

Step 2: Install your eSIM (steps for every brand)

Do this at home, on Wi-Fi, before you travel. Your plan does not start until you use data at your destination.

Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO (HyperOS)

Open Settings → Mobile networks.
Turn on Use eSIM (if you see it), then tap Manage eSIM.

When you arrive: Settings → Mobile networks → Data roaming → International roaming → Always, and choose the eSIM for mobile data.

Supports eSIM (global versions): Xiaomi 13, 13 Pro, 14, 14T, 14T Pro, 15, 15 Ultra, Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G, Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G and Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G. No eSIM: Xiaomi 13 Ultra and 14 Ultra (two physical SIMs only), and most China-only versions. OnePlus (OxygenOS)

Sony Xperia

Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM.

When you arrive: tap the eSIM, turn on Roaming, and switch Mobile data to it.

Supports eSIM: Xperia 1 V, 1 VI and 10 V, but only the XQ-xx54 model numbers. The dual-physical-SIM versions (XQ-xx72) do not support eSIM. Check Settings → About phone → Model.

Nothing

Supports eSIM: Nothing Phone (3). No eSIM: Phone (1), (2), (2a) and (2a) Plus. Phone (3a), (3a) Pro and (4a) support eSIM only in the versions sold in Japan. On the Phone (3), use Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.

Realme

Realme's global flagship spec pages (for example GT 7 Pro and GT 8 Pro) list two physical SIM slots and no eSIM. If you use a Realme phone, check the EID with *#06# before buying an eSIM.

Keep the travel eSIM switched on: go to your SIM settings and make sure the eSIM line is enabled.
Turn on Data roaming for the eSIM: this is required for travel eSIMs and does not cost extra.

Common Android eSIM mistakes

Buying before checking the EID. Many popular budget phones, including the Samsung Galaxy A12, A13, A14, A22 and A32, do not support eSIM at all.
Deleting the eSIM to "fix" a problem. A QR code usually works only once. Turn the eSIM off instead of deleting it.
Forgetting data roaming. It must be on for the travel eSIM, even though it is a new line.
Leaving mobile data on the home SIM. Your phone will try to use your home operator and you may be charged roaming fees.
Carrier-locked phones. If your phone is locked to your home operator, the eSIM may install but never connect.
