The real challenge is congestion, not coverage

Saudi Arabia's networks — STC, Mobily, and Zain — invest heavily for Hajj, and the sites are covered. The genuine challenge is that two million phones are competing for the same towers in a few square kilometres at the same moments. Coverage exists everywhere you go; raw speed dips at the peak times.

Makkah & the Haram: Strong coverage; slows at peak (after prayers, at night). Messages and voice notes get through; save big uploads for the hotel.

Mina (the tent city): Covered, but this is where congestion is heaviest — everyone is in one place. Send location pins and short messages; do not rely on a smooth video call during the busiest hours.

Arafat (Day of Arafah): The single most congested moment of the entire pilgrimage. Coverage is there, but expect it to be slow at midday. Coordinate with your group before you scatter.

Muzdalifah: Open ground under the sky; coverage is generally workable for the essentials.

Why data matters more here than anywhere

• Groups get separated — constantly. A shared live-location and a WhatsApp group are how people find each other again. Both need data on every member's phone.
• Families at home are anxious. A daily "I'm safe, alhamdulillah" message means everything.
• Official apps. The Nusuk / Hajj apps, maps, and schedules all need a connection.

Set it up before you fly

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi so you land already connected — no kiosk queue while your group moves on. Keep your home SIM in for your number, use the eSIM for data. For a full Hajj trip, plan for 8–15 GB depending on how much you video-call and share.
