Quick answer
It depends on the type of eSIM. An eSIM from your mobile carrier carries your normal phone number. Most travel eSIMs, including TripoSIM, are data-only: they give you internet but no number you can call or text. That's fine, because your home number stays on your other line and WhatsApp keeps working. If you need an extra number, you can add one, for example a US number in the TripoSIM app.
"Will I get a new number?" and "Can I keep my number?" are the two questions people ask most before buying an eSIM. The answer is simple once you know there are two kinds of eSIM. This guide explains both, so you know exactly what you're getting.
Key facts
- An eSIM is just a digital SIM card. Whether it has a phone number depends on the plan, not on the eSIM technology.
- Carrier eSIMs (from your home mobile company) carry your phone number, just like a plastic SIM.
- Travel eSIMs are usually data-only. TripoSIM eSIMs give you mobile data in 200+ destinations, with no number for calls or SMS.
- Your own number stays yours. Your home SIM or eSIM keeps your number on the second line.
- WhatsApp doesn't change. It's tied to your number, not to the line that gives you data.
- Need another number? Some local tourist SIMs come with a local number, and you can add a US number through an app.
The two kinds of eSIM
| Carrier eSIM (your home plan) | Data-only travel eSIM | |
|---|---|---|
| Phone number | Yes, your normal number | No usable number |
| Calls and SMS | Yes | No, use WhatsApp, FaceTime or other apps |
| Internet | Yes, roaming charges may apply abroad | Yes, at local travel prices |
| Where you get it | Your mobile carrier | Online, for example TripoSIM destinations |
| Typical use | Every day at home | Trips abroad |
Think of it this way: your carrier eSIM is your identity (your number), and a travel eSIM is your internet while you travel. Most phones can run both at the same time.
Does a travel eSIM give me a new phone number?
No. A data-only travel eSIM doesn't give you a new number to share. You can't receive normal calls or SMS on it, and people can't call it.
You may still see a number in your phone's settings for the travel eSIM. That's a technical line ID used by the network, not a number you can use. Calls and texts to it won't reach you, so don't give it to anyone.
Do I keep my phone number when I use an eSIM?
Yes. A travel eSIM doesn't replace your number. Your home SIM or eSIM stays in the phone as the second line:
- Your number stays the same and can still get calls and texts, if your carrier allows roaming. Check your carrier's roaming prices for calls.
- Your bank SMS codes keep arriving on your home line. Read can you receive OTP codes with a travel eSIM.
- Your WhatsApp stays on your number, and it uses the travel eSIM's data. More in keep your WhatsApp number with an eSIM.
Only one thing to switch: in your phone settings, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data, and turn off data roaming on your home line so you don't pay roaming fees.
Can I call and text with a data-only eSIM?
Yes, through apps. A data-only eSIM gives you internet, so you can:
- Call and message on WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, Signal or Messenger.
- Use Wi-Fi Calling on your home number, if your carrier supports it. See does Wi-Fi Calling work with a travel eSIM.
- Receive normal calls and SMS on your home line, which stays active alongside the travel eSIM.
What you can't do: give the travel eSIM's line to a hotel, a taxi driver or a website as "your number". For that, use your home number, or add a second number.
When do you need a second phone number?
Most travellers don't. But a second number helps when:
| You want to… | Best option |
|---|---|
| Get a local number for a long stay (months) | A local SIM or eSIM from a carrier in that country, usually with passport registration |
| Have a US number for WhatsApp, US clients or US apps | A US number in an app, like the TripoSIM US Number |
| Receive US calls abroad without roaming fees | A US number in an app, working over any internet |
| Keep a number while you travel or move | Keep your home line, and add an app number for the second |

Some countries' local tourist SIMs come with a local number, but they often need a passport check at a shop and work in that country only. For short trips, a data-only eSIM plus your own number is simpler.
Three lines on one phone
You can combine everything on one phone:
| Line | What it is | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Line 1 | Your home SIM or eSIM | Your number, bank codes, family calls |
| Line 2 | A TripoSIM travel eSIM | Cheap mobile data abroad |
| Line 3 | The TripoSIM US Number in the app | A US number for calls, voicemail and US texts |
The US Number works over the travel eSIM's data or Wi-Fi, so it doesn't need a SIM slot. Full setup in can you have 3 phone numbers on one iPhone.

Frequently asked questions
Does an eSIM have a phone number?
An eSIM from your mobile carrier does: it carries your normal number. Most travel eSIMs, including TripoSIM, are data-only, so they don't come with a number you can call or text.
Does an eSIM give you a new phone number?
A carrier eSIM keeps your existing number unless you ask for a new line. A data-only travel eSIM doesn't give you a usable new number. You keep using your own number on your home line.
Can I keep my phone number with an eSIM?
Yes. Your home SIM or eSIM stays in the phone as the second line, so your number, SMS codes and WhatsApp stay the same. The travel eSIM only handles your mobile data.
Why does my travel eSIM show a phone number in settings?
That's a technical line ID used by the network. It isn't a number you can share, and calls or texts to it won't reach you.
Can I get a travel eSIM with a phone number?
Some local carriers sell tourist SIMs or eSIMs with a local number, often with a passport check, and they usually work in one country only. Most travel eSIMs are data-only. If you need a US number, you can add one in the TripoSIM app for $100 a year or $12.99 a month.
Will WhatsApp change if I use a data-only eSIM?
No. WhatsApp is tied to your phone number, not to the line that gives you data. It keeps working on your number while the travel eSIM provides the internet.
Can people call me on my travel eSIM?
No. Calls to a data-only eSIM don't go through. People can call your home number (roaming charges may apply), or reach you on WhatsApp or FaceTime over the eSIM's data.
The bottom line
A carrier eSIM is your number. A travel eSIM is your internet. Use both and you keep your number, your WhatsApp and your bank codes while paying local prices for data abroad. Need one more number? Add a US number in the app. Ready for your next trip? Find your destination.
