How to Top Up Your Travel eSIM: Add More Data Without Reinstalling (2026)

Running low on data in the middle of a trip is stressful, but it is easy to fix. With most travel eSIMs you can add more data to the eSIM you already have. This is called a top-up. You keep the same eSIM on your phone, the same settings and the same connection. You just get more data.

This guide shows exactly how to top up a TripoSIM eSIM, when you can and cannot top up, and what to do if no top-up is offered.

Top-up vs buying a new eSIM

A top-up is almost always faster. The one thing to remember: a top-up must come from the same network as your eSIM. That is why the top-up options are shown inside your eSIM's page, not on the normal plans page.

How to top up your TripoSIM eSIM

You can do this from your phone in about two minutes, even while you are using the eSIM's own data.

1. Open My eSIMs: go to triposim.com/app/esims, or tap the View My eSIM button in your TripoSIM delivery email, and sign in with the email you used to buy.
2. Choose your eSIM: tap the eSIM you want to add data to, for example your Turkey or Europe eSIM.
3. Tap Top Up: open the Top Up tab (or the Top Up Data button) to see the packages available for that eSIM.
4. Pick a package: compare the data amount and the number of days, then tap the one that fits the rest of your trip.
5. Pay securely: complete the payment. You get an email receipt.
6. Keep using your eSIM: the new data is added to the same eSIM, usually within a few minutes. There is nothing to scan or install.

When can you top up?

• While your eSIM is working: yes. Many people top up before they run out so they are never offline.
• After your data has run out: yes, as long as the eSIM's validity period has not ended. This is the most common time people top up.
• After the eSIM has expired: no. Once the validity period ends, buy a new eSIM for your destination instead.
• Before you install the eSIM: you normally do not need to. Install it first, start using it, and top up only if you need more.

How to know when to top up

You do not have to watch your data every hour:

• Usage emails: we email you when you have used about 50%, 80% and 95% of your data, so a top-up never comes as a surprise.
• Check in My eSIMs: your eSIM's page shows data used and data left.

How much data should you add?

A simple rule: about 1 GB per day covers maps, messaging, social media and some browsing for most travellers. Add more if you use video calls, stream video or share your connection with a laptop through hotspot. Save data while you travel:

1. Download offline maps on hotel Wi-Fi.
2. Turn off automatic photo and video backup on mobile data.
3. Set video apps to standard quality.
4. Turn off app auto-updates on mobile data.

What if no top-up option is shown?

Sometimes the Top Up tab says there are no packages. This can happen because:

• The plan does not support top-ups. Some network plans cannot be topped up. In that case, buy a new eSIM for your destination. It installs next to your current one.
• The eSIM has expired. Expired eSIMs cannot be topped up.
• The eSIM is not linked to your account. Make sure you signed in with the same email you used to buy.

Unlimited plans: do you need a top-up?

Usually not. [Unlimited plans](/blog/unlimited-esim-daily-limit-by-country-2026) never run out. They give you a daily amount of full-speed data, then continue at a slower speed until the next day. If the slower speed is not enough for you, you can switch to a plan with a higher daily limit or a large fixed-data plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to reinstall my eSIM after a top-up?

No. The top-up adds data to the eSIM that is already on your phone. You do not need a new QR code, and you should not delete your eSIM.

Can I top up after my data has run out?

Yes. As long as your eSIM has not reached the end of its validity period, you can top up after the data runs out and keep using the same eSIM.

Can I top up an expired eSIM?

No. Once an eSIM has expired it cannot be topped up. Buy a new eSIM for your destination instead. It only takes a few minutes to install.

How long does a top-up take?

Usually a few minutes. If the new data does not show after 15 minutes, turn Airplane Mode on and off once, then check again in My eSIMs.

Does a top-up add more days?

Each top-up package shows its own data amount and number of days before you pay, so you can see exactly what you get.

Can I top up with a different provider?

No. A top-up has to come from the same network as your eSIM. If you want a different provider or network, buy a new eSIM instead.

Can I top up for someone else, like a family member?

Yes. Sign in to the TripoSIM account that bought the eSIM, choose that eSIM in My eSIMs and top it up. The data goes to the phone where that eSIM is installed.
