eSIM QR Code Not Working? 9 Quick Fixes That Usually Solve It

Having trouble scanning or activating your eSIM QR code? Here are the fastest fixes for installation, activation, and network issues on iPhone and Android.

If your eSIM QR code is not working, the problem is usually easy to solve. In most cases, the issue is not the eSIM itself — it is one of a few common setup problems like device compatibility, weak internet during installation, or using the wrong setup path on your phone.

Here are 9 fixes, ordered from most common to least common cause.

Fix 1: Confirm Your Phone Supports eSIM

This is the number one reason QR codes fail. Before trying anything else, verify your device:

iPhone: XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, SE (3rd gen+). Check Settings > General > About. If you see "Available SIM" or "Digital SIM", eSIM is supported.

Samsung: S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, S25 series, Note 20+, Z Fold/Flip series. Check Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.

Google Pixel: 3a and later. Check Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.

Also check: Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. A carrier-locked phone may have eSIM hardware but block third-party eSIM profiles.

Fix 2: Use Strong, Stable WiFi

This is the second most common cause. eSIM installation requires downloading a profile from a remote server. If your WiFi connection drops mid-download, the installation fails or gets stuck.

Do:

  • Use your home or office WiFi
  • Stay close to the router during installation
  • Avoid starting during peak usage times

Avoid:

  • Airport WiFi (slow, captive portals, unreliable)
  • Hotel WiFi (often throttled)
  • Mobile hotspot from another phone (can drop)

Fix 3: Try Manual Installation

If the QR code camera scan is not working, enter the details manually:

iPhone:

  1. Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code > Enter Details Manually
  2. Enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your provider

Android:

  1. Settings > Network > SIMs > Add SIM > Download a SIM instead
  2. Enter the activation code manually

TripoSIM provides manual installation details alongside every QR code in your dashboard.

Fix 4: Check If the QR Code Was Already Used

eSIM QR codes are single-use on most providers. If you previously installed this profile on any device — even if you deleted it — the QR code may be consumed.

Signs this is the issue:

  • Error message says "profile already downloaded" or "cannot add plan"
  • You previously scanned the same QR code on a different device

Solution: Contact the provider to request a new QR code or activation code.

Fix 5: Remove Old Inactive eSIM Profiles

If your phone has multiple old eSIM profiles from previous trips, they can sometimes interfere with new installations.

  • Go to Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or SIM Manager (Android)
  • Delete any eSIM profiles you no longer need
  • Restart your phone
  • Try scanning the QR code again

Fix 6: Restart Your Phone

A simple restart refreshes network services and SIM management. It solves:

  • Stuck activation processes
  • Failed scan handoffs
  • Network registration issues

Power off completely, wait 10 seconds, power on, then try again.

Fix 7: Use the Correct Settings Menu

Do not rely only on the camera app to scan QR codes. The most reliable method is through your phone's cellular settings:

iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Add eSIM Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM

Using the settings menu ensures the QR code is handled by the eSIM subsystem, not just the camera.

Fix 8: Enable the New Line After Installation

Sometimes installation succeeds but the line stays disabled. After installing:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or SIM Manager (Android)
  2. Find the new eSIM line
  3. Toggle it on
  4. Set it as your data line if needed

This is especially common on Samsung phones where the new line may not auto-enable.

Fix 9: Check Activation Timing

Some eSIMs activate immediately on installation. Others only activate when they connect to a supported network at the destination country.

If your eSIM shows "No Service" right after installation at home, it may be working correctly — it just has not connected to the destination network yet.

When to worry: If the eSIM still shows no service after arriving at your destination and enabling it, then there may be a real issue. Try toggling airplane mode on and off to force a network scan.

Still Not Working? Advanced Troubleshooting

If none of the above fixes work:

  1. Reset network settings — Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset Network Settings (this erases saved WiFi passwords)
  2. Update your phone's OS — older versions may have eSIM bugs
  3. Try a different WiFi network — some corporate or hotel networks block eSIM downloads
  4. Contact your eSIM provider — they can verify the profile status and reissue if needed

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my eSIM QR code not scanning? The most common reasons are weak internet, unsupported device, carrier lock, or scanning from the camera instead of the cellular settings menu.

Can I install an eSIM manually without the QR code? Yes. Most providers offer SM-DP+ address and activation code for manual entry. TripoSIM includes these in your order confirmation.

Why does my eSIM show "No Service" after installation? It may require activation at the destination, or the line may need to be enabled in your phone settings. If you are not yet at your destination, this may be normal behavior.
