1. Barcelona

Why go: Gaudí's city. The Sagrada Família is finally close to finished: its central Tower of Jesus Christ (172.5 m) was completed in February 2026 and inaugurated on 10 June 2026, exactly 100 years after Gaudí's death. Add Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter, the beach and the food markets.

What is new in Spain in 2026

• EU Entry/Exit System (EES): since 10 April 2026, non-EU visitors are registered digitally at the border (face photo and fingerprints) instead of getting passport stamps. Allow a little extra time on your first entry.
• ETIAS: the EU's new travel authorisation is not required yet. It is expected to start later, with a €20 fee, so check the official EU website before you travel.
• Barcelona tourist tax went up on 1 April 2026, and it is planned to rise a little each year.
• Short-term rentals: book only licensed holiday apartments. Platforms are removing listings without a regional licence.
• Sagrada Família centenary: special events continue through 2026, including a Christmas concert on 23 December.

• Spring (March to June) is the best season: warm, green and full of festivals.
• Summer is hot, often above 30°C inland and in the south. Beaches and the north are more comfortable.
• Autumn is mild and great for cities and food.
