Mobile data in Japan
- Very fast 4G and 5G in cities and most towns.
- Signal can drop in tunnels and deep mountain areas.
- Your eSIM connects as roaming on local networks, so turn on Data Roaming for it when you land. There are no extra roaming charges.
Useful apps
- Google Maps: very good train and subway directions
- GO: book taxis in Tokyo and other cities
- Suica in Apple Wallet: tap to ride trains and pay in shops (iPhone)
- Google Translate: point your camera at Japanese signs and menus
Good to know
- Many small shops and restaurants still prefer cash. 7-Eleven ATMs accept most foreign cards.
- In Japan, 110 is the police and 119 is an ambulance or fire.
