eSIM for the USA: Coast to Coast Without the Roaming Bill

Real US coverage for travelers — cities, national parks, and road trips — why an eSIM is the easy path (especially now US iPhones are eSIM-only), and how much data you need.

The United States is vast, and your phone is how you cross it — ride-hailing in New York, navigation on a Route 66 road trip, boarding passes at the airport, and staying in touch across time zones. Here is how to land connected without your home carrier's brutal roaming rates.

The networks

The US runs on three big carriers — AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. A good travel eSIM connects you to one (often T-Mobile or AT&T for travelers), giving you proper 4G/5G rather than the throttled "roaming" your home network would sell you.

Cities (NYC, LA, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco): Excellent 4G/5G everywhere, including most subway systems and airports. No concerns.

Interstates & road trips: Coverage is strong along the major highways and in towns. The famous gaps are in the wide-open spaces — stretches of Nevada, Utah, Montana, and the desert Southwest between towns can drop to nothing. Download offline maps before a long desert or mountain drive.

National parks: This is where expectations need calibrating. Grand Canyon village, Yellowstone's main areas, and Yosemite Valley have patchy-to-decent signal near lodges and visitor centers; deep in the backcountry, assume you are offline. Part of the appeal, honestly.

Why an eSIM is the obvious choice now

Two reasons. First, roaming from a foreign carrier in the US is famously expensive. Second — and increasingly important — US iPhones (iPhone 14 and newer) are eSIM-only, and the whole country is comfortable with eSIM, so the technology "just works" here. Install before you fly, keep your home SIM in for your number and bank codes, and switch the eSIM on when you land at JFK or LAX.

How much data?

  • City break (4–5 days): 3–5 GB for maps, rides, and sharing.
  • Two-week trip / road trip: 10–15 GB — navigation is the big consumer on a road trip.
  • Heavy user / hotspot for a laptop: 20 GB or an unlimited-style plan.
