Japan runs on precision, and so will your trip: train times to the minute, restaurant reservations by app, and a maze of subway lines you will navigate entirely by phone. Getting your data sorted before you land is not optional — it is how you actually move around Japan.
Coverage is world-class
Japan's carriers — NTT Docomo, au (KDDI), and SoftBank — run some of the densest, fastest networks on the planet. 4G/5G is effectively everywhere a traveller goes.
Tokyo & Osaka: Blanket coverage, including deep underground on the subway (Japan wired its metro tunnels years ago). You will have signal in Shibuya, on the Yamanote line, and inside the department-store basements.
Kyoto: Full coverage across the city and at the major temples and shrines (Fushimi Inari, Kinkaku-ji, Arashiyama). Solid signal even walking the bamboo grove.
The Shinkansen (bullet train): You will have coverage for most of the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka run, with brief drops in the long tunnels through the mountains. Fine for maps, messaging, and streaming between tunnels.
Mount Fuji, Hakone, the Japan Alps, rural Hokkaido: Good coverage in the towns and at the major viewpoints; thinner on remote hiking trails and deep in the mountains. For a normal sightseeing itinerary, you are well covered.
eSIM vs the pocket WiFi rental
Japan is the home of the rental "pocket WiFi" device, and travellers still default to it out of habit. An eSIM is usually the better choice for a solo or couple traveller: nothing to collect at the airport, nothing to return, nothing extra to carry and charge, and no deposit. Pocket WiFi still makes sense if you are a group of four all sharing one connection — but for most visitors, a data eSIM installed before departure is simpler and cheaper.
How much data?
- City trip (5–7 days): 5–7 GB covers heavy map/subway use, translation apps, and photos.
- Two-week tour (Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka + more): 10–15 GB is comfortable.
- Heavy user / hotspot: 20 GB or an unlimited-style plan.
