Do Not Panic — Most eSIM Issues Have Simple Fixes

You have purchased your travel eSIM, scanned the QR code, and landed at your destination. But something is not right — no data, no signal, or an error message you do not understand. Before you panic, know that the vast majority of eSIM problems are caused by a handful of common issues, and they almost always have a quick fix.

Here are the 10 most common eSIM problems and exactly how to solve each one.

1. eSIM Installed but No Data Connection

This is the most common issue, and the fix is usually simple.

Fix:

  • Go to Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > SIM Manager (Android).
  • Make sure your eSIM line is set as the active line for data.
  • Tap on the eSIM line and confirm Data Roaming is turned ON. This is critical — travel eSIMs connect through roaming agreements with local carriers, so data roaming must be enabled for the eSIM line.
  • Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, then off. This forces your phone to search for networks again.

2. QR Code Will Not Scan

You are trying to install the eSIM but your phone will not recognize the QR code.

Fix:

  • Make sure you are scanning from Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code, not from the regular camera app (though iPhone camera can work too).
  • Ensure you are connected to WiFi or cellular data. Your phone needs an internet connection to download the eSIM profile after scanning.
  • Clean your screen and make sure the QR code image is sharp and well-lit.
  • If scanning from a screen, increase the brightness on the device displaying the QR code.
  • Try entering the activation code manually instead. TripoSIM provides both a QR code and a manual activation code (SM-DP+ address + activation code).

3. "eSIM Cannot Be Added" Error

Your phone rejects the eSIM profile entirely.

Fix:

  • Verify your phone is carrier-unlocked. Locked phones may not accept eSIMs from other providers. Contact your carrier to confirm unlock status.
  • Check that your phone supports eSIM. Not all phone models have eSIM capability, even newer ones. Dial *#06# — if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM.
  • Make sure you have not already used this QR code. Each QR code can only be installed on one device. If you previously installed and deleted it, contact TripoSIM support for a replacement.
  • Check your phone's software is up to date. Older OS versions may have eSIM bugs that have been fixed in updates.

4. eSIM Shows "No Service" or "Searching"

The eSIM is installed but your phone shows no service in the status bar.

Fix:

  • Confirm you are in a coverage area. Check TripoSIM's coverage map for your destination.
  • Go to Settings > Cellular > eSIM line > Network Selection and switch from Automatic to Manual. Select a carrier from the list, then switch back to Automatic.
  • Restart your phone completely (power off, wait 30 seconds, power on).
  • If you just landed, wait a few minutes. It can take 1-2 minutes for your phone to register on a new network after enabling the eSIM.

5. Slow Data Speeds

You are connected but speeds are frustratingly slow.

Fix:

  • Check if you have used all your data allowance. Some plans throttle speeds to 128 Kbps after you hit your limit instead of cutting off entirely.
  • Move to a different location. You might be in an area with weak signal or network congestion.
  • Toggle airplane mode on and off to reconnect to a potentially better tower.
  • Check if Low Data Mode is enabled on iPhone (Settings > Cellular > eSIM line). This intentionally limits speeds to save data.

6. Data Roaming Setting Keeps Turning Off

You enable data roaming but it mysteriously turns off.

Fix:

  • On iPhone, check Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming. Make sure it is ON specifically for the eSIM line, not your home SIM.
  • Some phones have a global data roaming toggle and a per-SIM toggle. Both need to be on.
  • If you have a Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile (common on work phones), it may restrict data roaming. Check with your IT department.

7. Cannot Make or Receive Calls on Home Number

Your home SIM stopped working after installing the travel eSIM.

Fix:

  • This is a settings issue, not an eSIM conflict. Go to Settings > Cellular and make sure your home SIM line is still enabled (Turn On This Line).
  • Set your home SIM as the default line for voice calls and SMS.
  • Set the eSIM as default for cellular data only.
  • Remember: TripoSIM eSIMs are data-only. They do not affect your home SIM's ability to make and receive calls.

8. eSIM Disappeared From Settings

You installed the eSIM but cannot find it in your phone settings anymore.

Fix:

  • On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular and scroll down. Inactive eSIMs appear below active ones. Tap it and choose Turn On This Line.
  • On Android, go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager and check under both active and inactive SIMs.
  • If the eSIM was accidentally deleted (not just disabled), you will need a new QR code. Contact TripoSIM support.

9. Phone Gets Hot or Battery Drains Fast

After installing the eSIM, your phone feels warm and battery life plummets.

Fix:

  • This usually happens when the eSIM is searching for a network in an area with poor coverage. The radio constantly scanning for signal drains battery quickly.
  • If you are not in your destination country yet, disable the eSIM line until you arrive.
  • If you are in the destination but in a low-coverage area (basement, rural area), temporarily switch to airplane mode until you move to better coverage.

10. Plan Shows Active but Data Does Not Work

Your TripoSIM dashboard shows the plan is active and has data remaining, but nothing loads on your phone.

Fix:

  • Reset network settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset Network Settings (iPhone) or Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset Network Settings (Samsung). Note: this will forget saved WiFi passwords.
  • Check if any VPN is active. Some VPNs interfere with eSIM data routing. Disable VPN temporarily to test.
  • Check the APN settings. Most eSIMs configure APN automatically, but occasionally it needs manual input. Contact TripoSIM support for the correct APN for your plan.
