The iPhone is the most popular eSIM device in the world. Apple was one of the first to adopt eSIM technology, and every iPhone since the XR (2018) supports it. In the US, iPhone 14 and newer models are eSIM-only — they do not even have a physical SIM tray.

This guide covers everything iPhone users need to know about using eSIM for travel.

Which iPhones Support eSIM?

All of these iPhones support eSIM:

  • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (3rd generation, 2022)
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XR, XS, XS Max

Not supported: iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 7, iPhone SE (1st and 2nd gen), and older.

eSIM-only models (no physical SIM tray): iPhone 14 and newer sold in the United States. International versions still have a physical SIM + eSIM.

How Many eSIMs Can iPhone Store?

  • iPhone 13 and newer: Up to 8 eSIM profiles stored, 2 active simultaneously
  • iPhone XR through 12: Up to 5 eSIM profiles stored, 1 active at a time (plus physical SIM)
  • iPhone 14 US models: Up to 8 eSIM profiles, 2 active simultaneously (no physical SIM)

This means you can store travel eSIMs for multiple countries and simply enable the right one when you travel — no need to delete and reinstall.

Step-by-Step: Installing a Travel eSIM on iPhone

  3. Tap the "Cellular Plan Detected" banner that appears
  4. Tap "Continue" then "Add Cellular Plan"

  6. Choose a label: "Travel" or "Travel Data"
  7. For Default Line: keep your primary number
  8. For Cellular Data: you can choose later
  9. Tap "Done"

Method 2: Settings Menu

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Tap "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan"
  3. Tap "Use QR Code"

  4. Tap "Next" and follow prompts

Managing Dual SIM on iPhone

When you have both your primary SIM and a travel eSIM active:

Settings > Cellular shows both lines. Here is how to configure them:

  • Default Voice Line: Set to your primary number (for calls)
  • Default SMS Line: Set to your primary number
  • Cellular Data: Switch to your travel eSIM when abroad
  • Allow Cellular Data Switching: Turn OFF to prevent accidental roaming on your primary SIM

Quick Switch at Your Destination

When you land abroad:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular
  2. Under Cellular Data, select your travel eSIM
  3. Turn OFF Data Roaming for your primary SIM line
  4. Your travel eSIM will now handle all data

iPhone-Specific eSIM Tips for Travelers

  1. Install before your flight. You need WiFi or existing data to download the eSIM profile.
  1. Label your eSIMs clearly. When you install, choose a memorable label like "Turkey Trip" or "Europe Data". This makes it easy to identify in settings.
  1. Turn off WiFi Assist. Settings > Cellular > scroll down > WiFi Assist OFF. This prevents your phone from using cellular data when WiFi is weak, saving your eSIM allowance.
  1. Disable automatic updates. Settings > App Store > turn off "App Downloads" and "App Updates" under Cellular Data.
  1. Check data usage per line. Settings > Cellular shows data usage broken down by line (primary vs travel eSIM).
  1. Use Focus modes. Create a "Travel" Focus that limits background app refresh to save data.
  1. iCloud Photos. Turn off "Cellular Data" for Photos to prevent huge uploads over your eSIM.

Troubleshooting iPhone eSIM Issues

"Cannot Add eSIM" error:

  • Check your iPhone model is supported (XR or newer)
  • Ensure your phone is carrier-unlocked
  • Make sure you have WiFi connectivity
  • Restart your iPhone and try again

eSIM installed but no data:

  • Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > select the travel eSIM
  • Make sure Data Roaming is ON for the travel eSIM line
  • Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, toggle off
  • Restart iPhone

"eSIM Not Supported" message:

  • Your carrier may have locked eSIM functionality
  • Contact your carrier to unlock eSIM capability
  • Some carrier-locked iPhones restrict eSIM even though the hardware supports it

Cannot scan QR code:

  • Increase screen brightness on the device showing the QR code
  • Make sure Camera app is focused (tap the QR code area)
  • Try the manual entry method instead
