Egypt rewards the connected traveller: you will want maps to survive Cairo traffic, a translator app in the souks, and the ability to send your family a live photo from in front of the Great Pyramid. Here is the real picture of staying online across the country.
The networks
Egypt's operators are Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, Etisalat Misr (e&), and WE (Telecom Egypt). Vodafone has the broadest, most reliable coverage and is the one most travellers end up connecting to. 4G is widespread; 5G is rolling out in the major cities.
Cairo & Giza: Strong 4G everywhere — Downtown, Zamalek, Maadi, and out at the Giza pyramid plateau. You will have full signal at the Pyramids and Sphinx, and inside the Egyptian Museum. Cairo is dense and well-covered.
Luxor & Aswan: Good coverage in both cities and at the major temple sites (Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Philae, Abu Simbel town). Solid enough for maps and uploads.

The Nile cruise: Here is the honest part. On a Luxor-to-Aswan cruise, you will have signal when the boat is near towns and docked at sites, and gaps on the long stretches of river between them. Most cruise boats have their own (often slow, sometimes paid) WiFi as a backup. Treat the between-stops stretches as pleasant downtime rather than fighting for a signal.
Red Sea (Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam): Full 4G at the resorts and in the towns. On a diving or snorkelling boat out on the reef, expect signal near shore and none further out — normal for the sea.
The Western Desert & Siwa: Coverage thins out considerably. The oases have signal; the long desert drives between them do not. Download offline maps before you go.
Skip the airport SIM hassle
Buying a physical tourist SIM at Cairo Airport means a queue, your passport, and a hard-sell on a plan you did not want. A travel eSIM installed at home means you land, switch it on, and order your taxi before you have left the terminal. Your home SIM stays in the phone for your number and any bank verification codes.
How much data?
- Short trip (Cairo + Giza, 3–4 days): 3–5 GB.
- Classic tour (Cairo + Nile cruise, ~10 days): 5–10 GB — you will use less on the cruise stretches anyway.
- Beach + city combo, heavy sharing: 10 GB or more.
Your plan's validity starts on first use, so install now and it stays fresh until you land. Get your Egypt eSIM and travel connected.
