Turkey is one of the easiest countries in the world to stay connected in — right up until you make the classic mistake of buying a tourist SIM at Istanbul Airport for three times what it should cost, after a 30-minute queue, while handing over your passport. Here is how to skip all of that.
The networks are excellent
Turkey's three operators — Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey, and Türk Telekom — run modern, fast 4G/5G networks with wide coverage. Turkcell has the widest reach, especially in rural and mountainous areas. In practical terms, in most places a traveller goes, connectivity is a non-issue.
Istanbul: Blanket 4G/5G. Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Kadıköy, the Bosphorus ferries — all strongly covered. You will have signal deep inside the Grand Bazaar and on the tram.
Cappadocia: Good coverage in Göreme, Ürgüp and Avanos. The famous sunrise balloon flights? You will generally have signal in the air over the valleys — enough to post the photo that makes everyone jealous, though it can get patchy between rock formations. Enjoy the flight first.

The coast (Antalya, Bodrum, Fethiye, Ölüdeniz): Full 4G in the resort towns and along the main coastal roads. On a boat tour of the coves, expect signal near shore and gaps further out — normal for anywhere at sea.
Pamukkale, Ephesus, and the interior: Solid coverage at the major sites and towns. Long drives through Anatolia have occasional dead spots, so download your offline maps before a big road day.
The device warning that catches travellers out
Turkey has a well-known rule: if you insert a foreign physical SIM and use it beyond about 120 days, the phone's IMEI can be blocked until you register (and pay) the device. Here is the good news — a travel data eSIM used for a normal holiday is not what this rule targets, and for a trip of a couple of weeks it is a non-issue. You keep your home SIM for your number, use the eSIM for data, and you are well within normal tourist use.
How much data?
- City break (4–5 days): 3–5 GB covers maps, cafés, social, and sharing photos.
- Two-week tour (Istanbul + Cappadocia + coast): 10 GB is a comfortable amount for maps, uploads, and the odd video call.
- Heavy user / hotspot for a partner: 15–20 GB or an unlimited-style plan.
